I can't tell if this is a joke or not.
Crocodile Dundee is back. Well, actually, he's missing in the Outback. And the only person who might be able to find him is the loudmouthed American son no one knew he had. Introducing Danny McBride as Brian Dundee. The son of a legend is forced to channel his Aussie roots as he embarks on the ultimate adventure in the land down under.
The next generation of Crocodile Dundee is here — and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look.
After a hit original and two sequels, one of the most iconic movie franchises in Australian history is getting revived via a mysterious new project with the original legendary bushman Mick Dundee (played again by Paul Hogan). The actor, with the help of some friends, will be bringing the beloved character back in a fun and surprising way for Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home. Most surprising of all: Danny McBride stars as Dundee’s adventurous son!
“I’m not going to lie to you, to be a real Crocodile Dundee, I think 95% of it is the vest and then 5% is just being able to not fall down and stay on your feet,” McBride tells PEOPLE.
In the first teaser for the project, exclusive to PEOPLE, the Pineapple Express star recreates one of the franchise’s most iconic lines when he looks at the camera and says, “That’s not a knife — that’s a knife.”
“Crocodile Dundee is a film that has stood the test of time,” Hogan tells PEOPLE. “It was a defining moment in my life and one of my proudest accomplishments. Throughout the past few years, I’ve been thinking about how to bring Dundee to a new generation. I’m excited to introduce the new Crocodile Dundee to the world and look forward to sharing more news about those involved very soon.”
Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home arrives this summer.

Not sure why I even watched the teaser since it showed Danny McBride right there in the still frame, and it didn't disappoint. I'm sure there are people out there who find him funny, though.

There's nothing in either McBride's or Hogan's "upcoming projects" section at IMDB about this. Seems odd that they could film something like this completely under the radar for a release this summer. Perhaps a "fake trailer within a film" of some kind?

Reminds of that time someone floated a movie poster of a Walt Disney biopic staring Ryan Gossling.
I never found out if it was a fake, or something secretly put out to gauge reaction or somebody's attempt to get a screenplay sold.

I thought Paul Hogan fell off the face of the Earth.

Teaser looks fake to me. Has a cheapness to it. Is Rimfire films even a real company?

Google reveals that Rimfire Films was a company formed in the mid-80s in Australia...by Paul Hogan and another person.

State's Exhibit A: Danny McBride was not in Australia shooting in 2017 and was working on at least two other movies.
State's Exhibit B: The 78-year old Paul Hogan was working on another film ("That's Not My Dog!") in Australia last year.
State's Exhibit C: The Australian Film Board claims no knowledge of this movie's existence.
State's Exhibit D: All the behind-the-scenes photos on the website that popped up for the movie can be linked to the trailer's footage (which looks like it was shot in the Southwest U.S. and not Australia).
Ruling: Not sure what this is, but it's NOT a feature film about Crocodile Dundee's son. It could be a new project McBride is working on that perhaps features him as an actor in various movies (ala "Tropic Thunder"), quite possibly his next HBO series. Or it could be some kind of SuperBowl promotion/commercial.

Think this could be a lot of fun if done right. The franchise is dead, so anything to bring someone new to the franchise is good to me. The only good film in the series was the original, though II was watchable, which I did when I was a kid, when I usually watched the movies back to back.

A Super Bowl ad could be likely. Maybe from Subaru. But this seems a little too elaborate.

I’m also thinking it will be a SuperBowl commercial. Possibly Subaru or Mountain Dew since he’s been doing those commercials. Or one of those brands where in the ads they point out something that’s “not like the original” (wish I could think of an example).

Hemsworth was always rumored to take over the franchise. I guess that was true... but in a different sense.
