Id an old 1970's movie...
I can remember our teacher showing us this on filmstrip in math class one day when she didn't have a lesson plan for the day but I can't remember the name of it.
It was a 1970's movie, maybe around 1973-1975 but I'm not positive. It almost felt like an ABC afternoon special. The plot was about a teenage boy who had a dog (possibly some kind of retreiver) and a platonic female friend. The boy was on a quest to date some girl in school he had a crush on in school. During the movie he finally gets to date the girl for a while.
Toward the ending of the movie, the boy is walking around town with his dog. He gets distracted by something and the dog mamages to break free from the boys grip on the leash and starts chasing an animal. The dog runs out into the street and is struck by a car and killed.
The next day the boy is depressed and goes to meet the girl at a local diner. He wants to talk to her about his dog but she is now there with another boy and pretty much disses him like all women do. He then starts to walk home with his head down when his platonic friend comes up to him crying saying she just heard about his dog. The movie ends with him putting out his hand and then the girl grabs his hand and they start walking off.

I think I watched this around 1986 and it seemed like a realy old movie then, but it was only 10-11 years old at that time. I don't think any movies made 11 years ago now seem as dated as this one did back then.

A filmstrip was a series of slides (still images) on a single strip of film that went through a projector one image at a time. Are you sure you don't mean 16mm film? That's the format that schools used to show films in class in the pre-video era.
