Blade of the Immortal (Takashi Miike, (U.S.) 11/03/17

Shit, had no idea this was made. Red band trailer looks fantastic. I've never seen the anime.

Looks like it has already played in other foreign territories, but the U.S. gets it 11/03/17. I am excited.

I see he's slowed down to 2 movies a year, good for him! Everyone needs a break from time to time

I believe this is Screening as a part of Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.

The Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco, CA (as well as Denver & Brooklyn) are working with Fantastic Fest to bring over a bunch of the films being Screened on the weekend of 9/29/17.

I'm hoping this is one of them!

For anyone living in Northern California, The Clay Theatre in San Francisco, CA will be screening this film on October 31st.

Even better? Takashi Miike will be in-attendance following the screening for a Q&A!

Got my tickets!

Looks mind boggling crazy. Soundtrack sucks for the trailer though.

Looks like Nov 3 here...I think. When I click "buy tickets" it isn't listed. But it's listed in Coming Soon. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on it.

A little slower than I thought it would be. I prefer 13 Assassins over this.

This is actually opening up at a nearby Laemlee's for a 1 week engagement. I'll be seeing it Friday or Saturday. As much as I love the Nuart I'm not feeling a drive to the west side.

Agreed. I even fell asleep during the first quarter of the film. And when it finally gets to the carnage, it's mind-numbingly repetitive and gets tired quickly. If you see one guy slashing his way through dozens of opponents shot with a shaky long lens, you've seen a hundred. I didn't know who he was fighting or why. I just didn't care.

13 ASSASSINS is far superior to this. Much more disciplined, both narrative-wise and directorial-wise than this was.

Bummer, but I'm still catching it at the show -- I'll use my movie pass card since Laemmle's accepts it. I saw that it was 141 minutes, so it's a long one.

Shit, just saw that it's available on VUDU for rent -- the HD version is $7.99, so looks like I will be going that route.

I also felt there were scenes missing. Almost as if this were thrown together Lethal Weapon 4 style and things were done and shot at the last minute.

I tried to stay for the Q&A, but my nihongo is pretty bad and people were asking dumbshit questions.

This was paced fine, imo. Don't know how some can say that the first quarter of the film is boring -- shit, the film starts with an epic sword battle. I thought it was fun. Long, but it was entertaining. I do like 13 Assassins more, but this is definitely not a bad movie. I also liked this more than Miike's Harakiri.

There are long talky stretches in the first 40 minutes that take place at night where the characters speak in low, deep voices designed to lull you to sleep--which I did.

13 Assassins was better but this was still good.

Spoiler:
I cracked up when that dude showed his arm with the sharpened bones and later splattered on the rocks.

Re: Blade of the Immortal (Takashi Miike, (U.S.) 11/03/17

I thought the pace was fine as well. A friend of mine who attended the Screening with me on Halloween, fell asleep during some short portions of the film

He's read all the Blade of Immortal Manga, so it was interesting to pick his brain on if Miike was faithful to the source material.

The only issue I really had with the film was the character of Rin (Hana Sugisaki), who is an obviously Plot Device for Manji but does adds absolutely nothing after their initial encounter. In a 2.5 hour film, that's a bit rough. It really felt like Hana Sugisaki was just doing the same 1 or 2 emotions in every scene she was in.

Apparently, she's this way in the Manga as well.

I stayed for the entire Q&A at the San Francisco Screening and the questions were rough. Some were alright, most were pretty bad. Then again it's to be expected for these types of events.

There's always one person in the audience with the 'I'm a Filmmaker/Film Student/Etc....' start to a question.

I no longer stay after for Q&A's. People ask stupid shit and it is embarrassing.

I don't want to drive with you if you're listening to NPR.
