Tobe Hooper dead at 74.

TCM is my favorite horror film of all time. And I should point out that it took me a long time (After many viewings) to finally come to that conclusion. Like Crocker said, it's a nightmare come to life. You could just listen to that film without no picture and realize how unsettling it is. On a similar note, I HATED TCM2 the first time I saw it on video. But again, I eventually came around to accepting it. As Ian Jane mentions in his review of it on this site:
It's a truly weird film but it has its charm and it has its place alongside the other sequels – just don't go in expecting a rehash of the more famous first film, because it almost seems like Hooper knew he couldn't out do himself and so instead he opted to go in a completely different direction.

Over the years, I've really come to admire TC2 as a macabre cartoon come to life. It's a shame Bill Mosely doesn't get spoken of outside of horror conversations, his performances are always outstanding.
TC2 is such a fun movie. The soundtrack, the garish lighting, the weirdness of Dennis Hopper appearing in such a film. I'm so glad Hooper made this instead of trying to do another movie in the gritty style of the first. Even if that had worked out, it would have been pointless, since the first is such a masterpiece. I'm sure this movie got nothing but criticism when it came, which is too bad, because Hooper really made a gem.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of my favorite films across all genres. It never loses its power to be unsettling after so many viewings. I enjoy many of his other films. Eaten Alive is definitely a guilty pleasure. Very sad news.

Other than TCM, which is very nearly, but not quite, a masterpiece, and Salem's Lot, which is very good, I didn't care for any of Hooper's other output. He's another example of a director who shot most of his wad the first time around.
