Wonder Woman (PG-13) - An outstanding origin story for DC’s premier super-heroine. She’s a wonder!

I’ll admit it, I have not been enamored with DC’s attempts to create a unified movie universe. Marvel has done a great job, and the work they’ve done appeals to a very broad audience, However, Man of Steel was lacking any personality or charm, BvS: Dawn of Justice was a boring lead-up to a decent slug-fest that didn’t really get interesting until Wonder Woman showed up, and I never even finished watching Suicide Squad. (I enjoy CW’s Supergirl, Flash and Legends, but watch Arrow strictly out of obligation).

So when I say I think Wonder Woman is the best thing I’ve seen in the DCU, and actually has me excited for the new Justice League movie (Josh Whedon recently took the helm and finishing chores on that one), it is not faint praise. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is the best DC origin story I have seen committed to film since Christopher Reeves’ Superman, and Christian Bale’s Batman Begins. In fact, in some ways, it may surpass those efforts.

As the film begin, there is a call-back to Dawn of Justice, as Diana Prince, who is working in the Louvre in Paris, receives the original photograph that Bruce Wayne found a copy of on the internet - Diana in full Wonder Woman gear, surrounded by a group of men during World War I. The film then flashes back to her childhood on the island of Themyscira, home of a race of Amazonian warrior women. We get what I am assuming is an excellent summary of the Greek mythology surrounding Zeus’ creation of mankind, his conflict with Ares, god of war, and the creation of the Amazonians. We also see Diana’s training, and indications that she may be more than the normal Amazon warrior princess.

Flash-forward a few years (centuries?) and Diana witnesses the crash of a plane of the shores of her island home. She rescues the pilot, dashing Steve Trevor (a well-cast Chris Pine), who shares info of the World War that is raging in the modern world. Moved by the stories of innocents in danger, Diana leaves the island, but not before the Amazons have their own battle with German troops on the beaches of Themyscira.

Once in London of the early 1900s, much humor is derived from Diana’s naivety and attempts (and non-attempts) to call attention to herself, and Steve’s attempts to explain things her. Diana’s language skills eventually earn her credibility with some of the allied leaders (including a terrific David Thewlis), and soon Diana, Steve and a trio of his associates go on a mission to track down and stop the development of chemical weapons that make mustard gas seem quaint, and that threaten the impending armistice and the end of World War I.

Wonder Woman is, from start to finish, an outstanding adaptation of this strong woman’s beginnings and development into the hero she was meant to be. The film is exciting, funny, charming, romantic, and thrilling, but not cruel, dreary or depressing in any way. It is almost the opposite of some of the DC movies that preceded it. Hat’s off to director Patty Jenkins for bringing this excellent film to the big screen. And that terrific theme music, first introduced in Dawn of Justice, is used to great effect throughout the film.

I feel that DC (and Jenkins) went out of their way to create a film intended to be enjoyed by the broadest audience possible, to hit all the right notes, and to give the movie-goers a female comic book hero that everyone could get behind. Wonder Woman is definitely a wonder, and I give it the elusive 5 out of 5 lightsabers.

NOTES TO PARENTS: Wonder Woman is rated PG-13 for comic book action violence, the theme of the cruelty of war, and a scene of awkward semi-nudity. There is little cursing, primarily one or two h*** and d***. Trevor is briefly shown at a distance coming out of a pool of water with his hands covering his genitals, and the scene is comically awkward. There are a couple of lines of innuendo, and other than a kiss that implies something more might happen, no other sexual content is present. There is a scene of a battle between Amazon warriors and German soldiers, with bullets, arrows and spears, but little to no blood is shown. Other violence centers around battleground gunfire and explosions, but again, no blood. A German general and a chemist work to create a stronger chemical weapon, and the victim of one experiment is very briefly show. A chemical is released in a room of high ranking German officials, but nothing graphic is shown. The same goes for a scene in a town shortly after a chemical attack - a couple of bodies are briefly shown through the mist.

AFTER-CREDIT SCENES: There are NO after-credits scenes, but stick around for the first few minutes of the credits just for that incredible Wonder Woman theme music!

i particularly liked this review...

A rollicking action adventure in the tradition of 'Indiana Jones', with a fully functioning sense of humour and the year's most lip-smackingly evil baddie.

From what I am seeing in the reviews, it seems like this movie is going to be the "Iron Man" of the DCEU. Which is a VERY good thing, considering the influence that movie had on the MCU going forward.

Just noticed that it's 97-7 right now but one of the rotten reviews (by Eric Snider) isn't for WW. It's for Baywatch. RottenTomatoes needs to handle their quality control just a wee bit better.

To be fair, it's up to the critic to make sure to post it to the right movie. Not sure how you would confuse Wonder Woman with Baywatch, even if you thought both were terrible.

Although both movies to have slo-mo shots...

Absolutely perfect. I was left stunned with what I just saw, as the credits rolled.

Massive applause at the end.

Gal is amazing, on par with Reeve in the original Superman.

Fantastic from start to finish. Loved every second. Big applause at the end in our theater too. So great to see a hero like Wonder Woman on the big screen. Easy 5 stars, best movie I've seen in a long time.

I think it was mainly the WW1 setting. It's just so uninteresting to me and since this is almost just as much a Steve Trevor movie as it is a Wonder Woman one, it was hard for me to get into.
Gal was great in it though, don't get me wrong. I did love the scene on the boat with her and Steve.

Holy fucking shit this movie is fucking epic. I can't recall the last movie that I didn't have a single complaint*. The movie is finely crafted, perfectly cast, the tone and humor work well and the score is amazing.

This is also the first time since The Bourne Supremacy that after I walked out I wanted to turn around, walk back into the theater and watch it again.

Early overreaction? I'm ready to put this in my top 5 favorite superhero films of all time. That's how much I enjoyed it.

*the only thing that left me wondering about is that Diana went from wearing her Amazonian garb to the red and blue with nary a mention of why the sudden change.

I can't either...until now. Done!

DC has thrown Wonder Woman's gauntlet's down and finally proved they are ready to play with the big boys. Not to mention they have a new hero they can bank on other than Batman.
