#notmybond

As someone who grew up on Connery's Bond and went to see those films obsessively every time they were re-released, I never quite accepted Moore as Bond, but I did enjoy him in his various TV shows, particularly "The Saint," and the occasional non-Bond movie, e.g. THE WILD GEESE. He's wildly out of place as a Mafia lawyer in STREET PEOPLE (1976), an Italian crime movie co-starring Stacy Keach and shot in San Francisco, yet I really enjoyed his performance in it. It was a ridiculous movie, yet he maintained his dignity, which was more than Keach did.

Anyway, here is an appreciation of Moore's Bond from the New York Times' chief film critic, A.O. Scott:

RIP Rufus Excalibur ffolkes

The above does not contain a typo as it's explained in the film that his last name contains 2 lowercase f's, although I doubt anyone cares about that minutia.

Also, he was my favorite Bond, and hilarious when he wanted to be, such as in The Cannonball Run.

Ha that's the only Bond poster I had, not sure how I got it, maybe it came with a Nintendo or Commodore game

You know, I really don't go in for hero worship of actors and such, but if there's even a grain of truth to that story, then I can understand why some people really like the actors who become like ambassadors of story-telling to their fans.

Been watching his appearances as Beau Maverick on Season 4 of MAVERICK.
But my favorite appearance of Moore is in season 3 "The Rivals".
Moore's character and Bret(James Garner) change places to woo a woman.
Neil Hamilton plays Moore's Father.

My Rankings of Moore's Bond movies:

1) For Your Eyes Only.
2) The Spy Who Loved Me.
3) Octopussy.
4) Live and Let Die.
5) Moonraker.
6) The Man with the Golden Gun.
7) From a View to a Kill

Connery was "my" Bond, but Live and Let Die was my favorite Bond movie. RIP Roger... :(

The only one of Moore's movies I've bothered to upgrade to BD after buying the two Ultimate Bond DVD box sets. Some of it not at all the fault of Moore, but once the corn kicks in, the movies never overcome it.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. There is still plenty of corn in The Spy Who Loved Me.

His least corny and best movie was For Your Eyes Only. But to be honest, I loved all of his Bond movies. Every one of them have several things to like. Yes...even Moonraker.

I'm curious to see LIVE AND LET DIE again, for the New York/Harlem/Blaxploitation connection and the great cast (Yaphet Kotto, Julius Harris, Geoffrey Holder et al), even though I wasn't crazy about it in 1973, but the only Moore Bond film I've seen more than once is THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and that was chiefly for the kung fu connection. (One of the kung fu-powered school girls went on to play the fighting landlady in Stephen Chow's KUNG FU HUSTLE--30 years later!)

Agreed. All in all, I enjoy his Bond films the most, notwithstanding Moonraker. I haven't seen any Bond flick in a long time, but For Your Eyes Only would probably be my fave of Moore's. The opening, with Moore, poker-faced, driving the Citroen straight down the mountain, always had my dad in stitches.

Sad to see him pass.

Got the entire Bond collection on VUDU a couple months ago and rewatched all of them.

For Your Eyes Only is one of my favorite Bond movies.

RIP Roger Moore.

He seems to have been a real gent in real life too!

I remember him from Ivanhoe and The Saint days, but I must say, Connery was IMHO the best James Bond there ever was.

I didn't like the way Moore took it in another direction -in short, too much humour. I know Connery had his quips too, but Moore took them to the nth degree and all in all, almost turned the series into light comedies. I don't think Ian Fleming ever had that in mind. Don't forget too Moore was already too old to play Bond when he started! As for his acting ability, well, let's just say
he was right himself when he described the famous eyebrow comment. Personally I only thought The Spy who Loved Me was about his best offering in the series and didn't think much of the rest of his input.

Having said all this, he was always entertaining and certainly did his bit for Unicef etc and seems to have been a genuinely nice man.

He was one of those people who seemed to be around forever and will be missed.

Well, I can certainly agree with the ranking of the Top 2 there.

My rankings of Roger Moore's James Bond movies...

1. For Your Eyes Only
2. The Spy Who Loved Me
3. A View to a Kill
4. Octopussy
5. The Man With the Golden Gun
6. Moonraker
7. Live and Let Die

Even in the worst outings Roger was in he was always charming and entertaining. In his best movies he was actually acting a lot of the time.

While he is my next to last favorite Bond I still enjoy the hell out of his movies and he seems to have been a genuinely good, nice human being, which is what counts the most.

For me, Moonraker is a bit too cheesy and Octopussy is a bit too dull. I'd rank all the others about equal for me.

It's funny, I popped in Live and Let Die last night, and what struck me is how fully realized the "Roger Moore" Bond formula is right in his first one. The tone, the humor of Moore's whole run is already there. I think in some ways Hamilton tried to do this type of Bond film with Diamonds are Forever, but it didn't really work with Connery. But with Moore it just clicked.

I think that's a huge part of the reason the Bond series has been so successful--throughout the whole run, the tone of the films has generally been in sync with the strengths of the various actors in the role.

Nothing you've said is wrong. It's just that none of what you describe was Moore's doing.

Damn, I won't be able to make it to the May 31st Screenings. The Spy Who Loved Me starts at 6pm with For Your Eyes Only following it at 8:35pm. I won't be able to get to San Francisco from where I teach at in 30 minutes :(

I'm going to try to make it to the June 4th Screening, even though I already have plans that day.

Moonraker (1979) was the first Bond film that my Dad ever showed me and the first Bond film I ever saw. Re-watching it over the weekend on Blu-Ray (which looks fantastic) brought back some great memories.

(R.I.P.) Roger Moore

Good to know. Thanks. Never saw either of those on the big screen. My first Bond in the theater was Octopussy.

As with many here, Moore was my Bond growing up so while I certainly acknowledge there were better films (and probably better Bonds), when you say James Bond I will always kind of think of Roger Moore first.

My ranking of his films would be:
1. Octopussy (if only for the way Louis Jordan says Octopussy)
2. For Your Eyes Only
3. The Spy Who Loved Me
4. Moonraker
5. The Man with the Golden Gun
6. A View to a Kill
7. Live and Let Die

Surely he must have had some input in the James Bond movies?
