Mine as well.

One of the first movies that I saw in the theater was "For Your Eyes Only". As a kid, I just loved them.

Sad to see him go.

Didn't even know he was sick. Damn you, Cancer.

I recall him appearing on the Carson for "Octopussy", and them joking about the tuk tuk chase with the camel.

Looking back on them, I realize they weren't always as serious as the other Bond films, but Moore's Bond still plugged away, getting the job done. I guess that's what I liked about his performance.

That was my exact same experience! We only had three channels for entertainment back then so that Sunday night movie was a big deal. The Moore films didn't feel campy to me. They were exciting action as he battled the terrifying Jaws. My dad always loved the scene in View to a Kill where Bond's car gets hit and he drives around half of a car. lol

I didn't get to experience the Connery Bond films until the 90s when the series got rebooted with Bronson and released affordably on VHS.

The first thing that popped into my head when I read this was in the voice of Blofeld (from which movie I don't recall) saying,

"Goodby, Mr. Bond."

R.I.P., Mr. Moore.

I liked Connery, Craig and Brosnan, but Moore was the epitome of Bond. RIP.

This to me is the most iconic image of Bond; sexy, violent, beautiful, exotic, global, timeless, glamorous

Re: RIP - Roger Moore

He wore a tuxedo better than any other Bond, and he was the best looking. His films seem dated now, but I think that speaks to those films so quintessentially embodying their era. The films were a convergence of everything stylish and cool of that era. Including him. He was the quintessential '70s and '80s man. He was not timeless like Connery, but he was perfect for his time.

The pre credit sequence from FEYO.

I've had it out and was planning to watch it sometime in the next few weeks.
Actually, I was going to go through most of the series again. LALD and TMWTGG I'd hadn't seen in a while so those were also on tap.

It'll all be a little more bittersweet now.

Moore was "my" Bond as well. The first Bond movie I saw in theaters as a kid was Live and Let Die, and the bleeding eyeball in the opening sequence made a big impact on me.

Home video made me realize there were better Bonds, but I still like Moore.

Yeah, he was Bond for me as a kid. His take was refreshing after the often dour Connery version.

He was also great in Cannonball Run.

Moore was my favorite James Bond. That doesn't mean his Bond films were the best, which is why so many people love Connery as Bond.

He seemed to be in so many adventure and action flicks back in the 1970s and 1980s, before action stars started getting younger and more physical.

My favorite Bond as well. He brought charm, wit and humor to the role.

When someone mentions "James Bond" to me, the first image that comes to mind is Moore atop the Golden Gate Bridge.
The poster is seared into my consciousness!

Another chime in for "my" Bond. He's the one I grew up with, whereas Connery was more of a historical figure. I still think "A View To A Kill" is one of the top 5 Bonds no matter how silly it gets or how old Roger was, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees ;)

There's a lovely little appreciation by A.O. Scott in The NY Times today I dug:

"My James Bond is not macho compensation for lost imperial power, like Mr. Connery, or an anxious avatar of globalization, like Mr. Craig. He is a cartoon superhero in evening wear, a man whose mission is to embody — and, therefore, to transcend — a secondhand, second-rate age, to be cool and clever in a world determined to be as lame and dumb as possible.

Nobody did that better than Roger Moore."

Re: RIP - Roger Moore

Yep, while I like each of the Bond actors, Moore was also the one I grew up with and is my favorite.

I also originally saw all these on the ABC Sunday night movie as a kid in the late 70's, early 80's. This franchise rivaled Star Wars for me at that age.

As others have said, he may not have had the toughness or physicality of some of the other actors, but he was PERFECTLY suited for the run of movies that he did.

I completely agree--it seems like that's one I enjoy more each time I watch it. Good summary:

Re: RIP - Roger Moore

Of his films The Spy Who Loved Me really stands out as the best of the bunch, at least for me. Probably not coincidence that it's the one with the least of the corny crap that ruined so many of the others. The only one of Moore's movies I've bothered to upgrade to BD after buying the two Ultimate Bond DVD box sets. Some of it not at all the fault of Moore, but once the corn kicks in, the movies never overcome it.

Good thing I love A View To A Kill, then.

It's an underrated and underappreciated movie.

Moore was "my" James Bond, too.

Watching them as a kid, he was the one I wanted to be because it seemed like he was the one having the most fun.

Walken makes a fun, but ridiculously over top (even for Bond) villain. And the theme song is great. The rest? I guess it's better than Moonraker.

I saw Live and Let Die on the ABC Sunday Night Movie too. I saw You Only Live Twice, The Man with the Golden Gun, and Moonraker on cable at my cousin's house. For Your Eyes Only was the movie that I remember best because we got HBO and it was on all of the time.

I think I saw most of the 60s and 70s Bond films on ABC when I was a kid. It was always a treat when they showed one.
