Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021, D: Roberts)

‘Resident Evil’ Franchise Set for a Reboot (EXCLUSIVE)

Germany’s Constantin Film to produce, as on original six-movie franchise

The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has not ended after all.

Details such as the reboot director, stars, and how the reboot would fit into the franchise narrative are being kept under wraps. But Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the board at Constantin Film, did confirm to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival that a reboot is in development at the giant German production company, which owns rights to the franchise and has produced all of its installments.

The franchise was set to end with this year’s “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” which grossed $312 million worldwide after its January release, including an eye-popping $160 million in China alone. Sony helped sow the seeds of success by securing a release for “Resident Evil: Afterlife” and “Resident Evil: Extinction” in China. - Cha-ching!

Based on the Capcom video game, the series launched in 2002 with Paul W.S. Anderson directing, and Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Bernd Eichinger, and Samuel Hadida producing the first of a six-movie series. The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide to date, making it Europe’s most successful independent horror-genre movie franchise in history and the highest-grossing film series to be based on a video game.

“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” was again directed by Anderson and produced by Bolt with Hadida and Constantin’s Robert Kluizer, and exec produced by Moszkowicz.

Distributed by Screen Gems in the U.S., all six “Resident Evils” have starred Milla Jovovich. Anderson has written all six of the installments and directed four. His involvement on a reboot is open to question, however, as he prepares “Monster Hunter,” again inspired by a video game from Japan’s Capcom, which is set to be brought to the market in late 2017 or early 2018.

I still don't understand how this franchise got so popular. These are some of the shittiest movies to ever make huge profits.

Cripes already? They just finished the last of the other films. I didn't mind the Paul W.S. Anderson/Milla Jovovich films for what they were I guess. Not great but kind of fun popcorn horror/action.

I watched the first two RE movies and quickly lost interest in the series. I'd be down to see them do it right this time.

I can see why they rushed the last film. They're fast tracking this one.

Actually it was the opposite. Production was delayed a year because Milla got pregnant

I've enjoyed the Resident Evil movies, just bought The Final Chapter, haven't watched it yet but I'm expecting to be entertained once again. However, I see no reason whatsoever to reboot this. It's done, do something else.

Well, having seen the mist recent one, I would have never known that. It looked like they barreled right through it -- it was such an incoherent mess.

It made a lot of money for being an incoherent mess.

Yup, all foreign money, too. My point was that it was an obvious rush-job.

I'd love to see a reboot just so that it tackles the video game story lines and content better.

I wouldn't mind seeing a movie based on the first game. Do some really freaky shit and have Wan direct it.

I really liked the first installment. Beyond that I enjoyed some parts of the rest, but most were a hot mess. I'm down for a reboot as long as it is an actual reboot and takes a new tone -- straight horror or more of an action bent (ala Aliens).

Maybe the reboot will attempt to ground it a bit. I'll defend the RE movies and tell you they're all a good time. But they're really out there with the non-stop deus ex machinas. All the CG goofiness works because it's consistent.

I'd liken the RE movies to Batman and Robin or those later Brosnan Bond movies. Bring it back to where it can be taken seriously.

Go back to the first game and tell that story. Keep Paul Anderson and his wife out of this project.

Yea I am with you here...and I am just as guilty because I have seen all of them with the exception of the last one. Only one in the theater however (part 3 I think).

This is a series that has so much potential to be done right and, yet, I have no doubt they'll just keep doing them wrong.

If only Romero had gotten his version off the ground back in the '90s.

Hopefully they'll reboot it and actually make them like the game.

Memories coming back! RE: 2 was one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. Maybe right behind a couple of the Zelda games.

He may not being directing it (yet), but at least he is producing it.

Yeah, just read that James Wan has signed on a producer.

I am now interested.

re: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021, D: Roberts)

Ah, my favorite soapbox. With no exaggeration intended, when I first played Resident Evil back in 1997, it changed my life. I'd played games which had "plots", but this had a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end, along with distinct characters, and plot twists. The best word to describe it was cinematic. Translating it into a movie should have been easy. I actually wrote a screenplay back in 1998 which streamlined the story from Resident Evil and incorporated some elements from Resident Evil 2. So, it's nice that Paul and Milla wanted to make an action movie, but they didn't have to sully the Resident Evil name to do so. It's an insult to the fans of the series, how they pick and choose elements from the games, inserting them into their lame series. The only compliment that I can give to the movies is that the Nemesis looked good. Otherwise, they are garbage. My hope is that the reboot will go back to the original game and do it right. Those who don't know the games need to learn about the Spencer Mansion.

This will fail. The only reason this series had any sort of success was due to Milla Jovavich kicking ass and looking hot and believable while doing it.
