EXCLUSIVE: The book was snatched last year after a bidding war for $5 million by Imperative Entertainment and now the Eric Roth feature film adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers Of The Flower Moon: The Osage Murders And The Birth Of The FBI may end up with another few good men. We hear that Imperative is working right now to put together some A-listers for the big screen; first choices happen to be Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, and we hear the three are seriously considering it. Imperative partners Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas are producing.
Scorsese and De Niro have been huddling on The Irishman at Netflix, but there’s no completed deal yet.
Grann’s Killers Of The Flower Moon, which bows this week from Doubleday, tells the true crime story about multiple murders of members of the Osage Indian tribe in Oklahoma that occurred after they found oil on their lands. It is about conspiracy, greed and murder in the Indian nation — so bad the federal government had to step in. It also chronicles the rise of J. Edgar Hoover, who led the investigation into the murders and ended up making a name for himself.
No one involved would comment.

ROME – Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are developing a film adaptation of true-crime thriller “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” as the director’s next project after “The Irishman.”
Scorsese’s longtime production designer, Dante Ferretti, told Variety that Scorsese hoped to start shooting “Flower Moon” in the spring of next year. The project is based on the bestselling book by David Grann, a staff writer for the New Yorker and author of “The Lost City of Z.”
Rights to “Flower Moon” were snapped up by Imperative last year for a reported $5 million, and a script has reportedly been drafted by veteran Oscar-winning scribe Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”).
Ferretti, who has worked with Scorsese on nine movies from “The Age of Innocence” through “Silence,” said he was going to “go to Oklahoma” to do preliminary location scouting for “Flower Moon.” The story, set in the 1920s, focuses on a string of murders of members of the Osage nation in Oklahoma after oil was discovered beneath their land. The chilling series of slayings was one of the fledgling FBI’s first major homicide investigations.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have been eyeing the project for months, and are developing it together with Imperative Entertainment.
John Atwood, Imperative’s chief financial officer, said in an e-mail that “we are currently conducting preliminary research on the film, but there are no formal attachments nor confirmed start date at this time.”
Ferretti said that “the whole 1920s world of the Indians who lived there needs to be reconstructed” for “Flower Moon,” adding that he expects to “start preparing this film in September, because Scorsese will shoot it immediately after finishing ‘The Irishman.’”
Scorsese is currently getting ready for an early September shoot on “The Irishman,” a gangster movie centered on the life of mob hit-man Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, played by Robert De Niro. Several sources have confirmed that “The Irishman” will be financed by Netflix, though the deal has yet to be officially announced.
There is no word whether Netflix would give “The Irishman” a wide theatrical release, but “I don’t think Martin would accept the fact that one of his movies would just be seen on a small screen and not in movie theaters,” said Ferretti, who is not working on the film.
The triple-Oscar-winning production designer recently completed work on his first rock musical, “Divo Nerone,” staged in a unique open-air venue atop the Palatine Hill in the ancient Roman Forum, with a rotating proscenium and 28 scene changes. Although the show was mostly panned by Italian media and has been temporarily shut down after nuns in a nearby monastery complained about its high decibel levels, Ferretti noted that “critics praised the set design and costumes,” which were created by his wife and working partner, Francesca Lo Schiavo. The pair was recently honored by the American Academy in Rome with its McKim Medal.
Ferretti and Lo Schiavo also recently designed the set for Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” which opened the Spoleto Festival in June – “my third opera there in three consecutive years,” he said.

Paramount will finance and distribute the Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio murder mystery movie, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Paramount chief Jim Gianopolous announced the deal Wednesday at the studio’s CineEurope presentation in Barcelona. Scorsese will direct and DiCaprio is attached to star in the adaptation of David Grann’s non-fiction book. Eric Roth is writing the screenplay.

After months of discussions with the Osage Nation about making “Killers of the Flower Moon” into a movie, the tribe’s chief said Friday that director Martin Scorsese finally confirmed that his team will film the adaptation in Osage County.
Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear told the Tulsa World on Friday evening that Scorsese and members of his team visited the Osage Nation campus earlier that day for about two hours. He said the tribe told Scorsese’s team about its interest in providing resources to help ensure that the film portrays an accurate representation of the Osage people.
“I told him we’re all very excited about this movie, and eventually I came to the question that we had been wondering about for a year: Is he going to film here? And he said yes,” Standing Bear said. “And then his producer said, ‘We’re going to film all of it here.’ So that was big news.”
“Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” is about the murder of Osage tribal members in the 1920s after the discovery of oil on their land made them wealthy. Production company Imperative Entertainment paid $5 million in 2016 for the rights to the book and later brought Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, a frequent collaborator of his, in on the project.
The World reported last month that Scorsese’s team was in Pawhuska doing research. Paramount Pictures announced at a European film expo on June 19 that it would finance and distribute the movie, according to Variety.
“Two weeks ago some of the other production people could not tell us for sure that they would (film in Oklahoma,)” Standing Bear said Friday evening, adding that “today they said yes.” He relayed that “it was a very recent decision.”
He said the production team said it wants to work closely with the Osage Nation so the tribe’s 1920s culture, history and language would be correct in the film.
The Osage News first reported on the meeting among Standing Bear, Scorsese, producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff, co-producer and researcher Marianne Bower, and Osage Nation project ambassadors Chad Renfro and Addie Roanhorse.
Other project members include executive producer Georgia Kacandes and production designer Dante Ferretti, who has three Academy Awards for art direction, two of which were for Scorsese’s films “The Aviator” and “Hugo.”
Standing Bear said Friday’s meeting was the fourth with members of the film team but the first with Scorsese, who said he had not been to Oklahoma before. Scorsese, according to Standing Bear, said Robert DeNiro agreed to play the character of William Hale, one of the main characters in the book.
“This is going to be by far the biggest production that has ever been in our area — ever,” Standing Bear said. “It’s going to be great for the economy. It’s going to be great for aspiring actors and actresses.”
He noted that the 2013 film “August: Osage County,” which featured Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and was produced by George Clooney, was also shot on location.
“Pawhuska is a really great place to film because of our architecture and our location,” Standing Bear said.

Martin Scorsese may be on the path towards winning a number of Oscars for his just-released epic The Irishman, but the filmmaker is already readying his next project. Back in 2017, word first surfaced that Scorsese was eyeing an adaptation of David Grann’s non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon as not only a new project, but a reteam with both Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. I recently had the chance to speak with Scorsese’s frequent cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto about his stunning work on The Irishman, and during our phone conversation in mid-November, Prieto was actually in Bartlesville, Oklahoma (where Terrence Malick shot To the Wonder) doing some preliminary camera tests and scouts for Killers of the Flower Moon. He revealed that right now, filming on the project is expected to begin in March 2020. Obviously things can change, and in the world of moviemaking anything can happen, but that appears to be the targeted start of production for Scorsese’s next movie. It could also explain why DiCaprio backed out of Nightmare Alleystarring in Guillermo del Toro‘s , which starts shooting at the same time.

“Right now I’m in the process of researching different ways of shooting it so we still have to actually meet, and I’ll show him images, propose ideas. He’ll probably have his thoughts too, but we still haven’t figured [out the tone of the film]. So, on the way.”
Prieto and Scorsese first collaborated on The Wolf of Wall Street and Prieto subsequently shot Scorsese’s Vinyl pilot as well as Silence and now The Irishman, so I can’t wait to see how the two tackle the vast exteriors of the Oklahoma plains in Killers of the Flower Moon.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Martin Scorsese’s representatives are in talks with Apple and Netflix to produce and/or distribute “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The project, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, is currently set up at Paramount but the studio is balking at its ballooning budget.
The film is now expected to cost over $200 million, and Paramount told Scorsese to seek out other partners. According to the report, Scorsese also reached out to Universal and MGM — but Paramount is open to a deal that would still allow them to participate as as financier or distributor.

Lily Gladstone is set to star in Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro also are attached to star in the pic with Martin Scorsese directing. Jesse Plemons has joined Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in Killers of the Flower Moon, the big-budget thriller Martin Scorsese is directing for Apple.
The casting is a major coup for Plemons, who for years has anchored productions or stole scenes with his performances in supporting roles. And it coincides with him being wanted for lead roles not just by Scorsese, with whom he worked on 2019’s The Irishman, but also by Jordan Peele, who had offered him the male lead in his latest thriller.
The hope was for Plemons to do both but scheduling ultimately could not be worked out. Peele’s movie is to shoot early summer while Flower Moon shoots from May to late summer.
Regardless, Plemons now finds himself in a role was originally to have been played by DiCaprio before the Oscar-winner segued to a secondary lead.
The script, written by Eric Roth and based on the David Grann bestseller, is set in 1920s Oklahoma, against the backdrop of the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.

Sorry to has ever read it, but the book isn't really good. It's okay. But a decent book. Why this book would somehow cost $200+ million (as they are saying), just blow my mind. Sure, you probably have to give DiCaprio $20 mil upfront, but the rest...this should be a movie that costs well below $100 Mil...Just stupidity if I had anything to say...the studios were right for turning Scorsese down because of his ludicrous budget...Just like they should've cause of The Irishman, just keep him on budget...Don't let him go crazy...So stupid...And again, that book really wasn't that great...It was okay...But it's not worth $200+ million dollars...That's just asinine...
I thought it was a pretty decent read. Definitely kept my interest. That said, I do agree that this shouldn't be costing $200 million unless Scorsese plans to do some kind of major league sweeping shots of vistas and such. Only issue is that this isn't that kind of story for the most part.

Apple/Paramount never gave it a release date. I mean... if Thelma can deliver a cut quickly... then maybe December... but that seems pretty unlikely. No need to rush out a $200mil film.

With the Oscars coming into view, and the end of the 2023 awards season, we turn out attention to the next round of movies.
Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” is at the top of all lists for this year’s new crop. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, “Flower Moon” is set in the West in the 1920s, and it’s based on the book by David Grann. The story concerns the real life murders of Native Americans in Oklahoma when their land is discovered to be sitting on oil fields.
I’m told that the Cannes Film Festival is chomping at the bit to premiere the film, not in competition and not for opening night. It would be just the prestige of that trio walking the red carpet.
So what’s the issue? I’m told by sources that “Flower Moon” is currently clocking in at three hours, twenty minutes. This is nothing new for Scorsese, whose every new film starts at super sized until Oscar winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker summons a succinct two and a half hour final cut out of Scorsese’s masterful shots. But Cannes can’t program such a long film, so they’re waiting to see how this all works out.
So is Apple. They wrote the check for all this. And they’ve got to promise Cannes the film will have a real theatrical run before streaming, and in every country, especially France. Stay tuned…
