Xtro 2 & 3 had nothing to do with the original Xtro beyond the basic concept of alien (even though from 2 it was extra-dimensional).

There's the "American Pie Presents" series of spin-offs:

So they weren't just in name only.
And I do own and have seen all of them.

Well, I was going by the OP's definition of "have little in common," which I took to mean it could still have something in common, but not of significance.

How about Bill Cosby's "Leonard Part 6"?
There were no parts 1-5; the film's title was only one of many failed attempts at comedy.

In 1988, the movie "Watchers" based on a book by Dean R. Koontz was released.
Fans of the book hated this movie because it deviated so much from the source and not in good ways.
So in 1990, the "sequel" titled "Watchers II" was released, but actually was just a more faithful re-adaptation of the original novel with no connection to the first movie.
(Because this was actually a remake, the only reason I can figure on why they titled it "Watchers II" was due to it coming out only 2 years after the original, so they were probably afraid people would think it was the exact same movie and not go to see it)

Silent Night Deadly Night Part 4 & 5 had no connection to the previous three films aside from the Holiday theme.
I don't think any of the Howling films after the second one had any story connection to the first.
That franchise is interesting because 2 has nothing to do with 1, but 3 continues the Mary Lou story from 2. Then 4 is an entirely new idea again. Two connected movies bookended by unrelated stories.
