re: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (2023, D: James Gunn)

He was very political and outspoken on his Twitter feed. Sometimes almost obnoxious.

Shame he got canned. He said recently that he finished the script for Volume 3. I wonder if that is going to be used by Disney or if they are going to scrap it and hire someone else to start from scratch.

Wow, so someone dug up old shit from his past that got him canned.

It's nothing new. When you have someone who is, as you said, outspoken, people will dig things up (this goes on both sides of the political aisle). So, maybe just not make those kind of jokes in the first place? Disney could not keep on a guy who made pedophilia jokes. I've been critical of that company but I can see why they did.

With those tweets he just proved that he is qualified to be President of the United States. I would vote for him.

Gunn was targeted by one of the main guys behind the pizzagate bullshit. A troll who has been far too successful at this kind of stuff over the last few years. Gunn's tweets and jokes are bad, and sure, maybe he deserves to be canned (Disney won't put up with anything like this), but make no mistake: the ONLY reason it was even brought up was because of a pizzagater.

To be clear, I'm not defending Gunn. Not in the slightest. I'm just saying the circumstances are relevant, and this guy and his crew of alt-right trolls have no problem digging into anyone's history to find something to get them fired and ostracized. Gunn is just one of the more famous targets of theirs.

They went after Sam Seder, a radio talk show host. He was canned from syndication with MSNBC, but after they actually looked into what happened, they reversed that.

Gunn's Twitter feed hasn't been deleted.

Jesus, I haven't seen his feed recently, but it's just flooded with political shit.

Gunn's tweets always came across my feed. Interesting turn of events. Cernovich is a grade-A douchebag. He's as Trump-y as it comes. Not everyone who voted for Trump is a bad person. But Cernovich is pretty-much if you take the stereotype of an awful human being and Trump supporter. He's so well known as being a horrible person, that I'm kind of surprised any input from him would be validated by Disney.

I know Gunn as a Troma guy who went mainstream with Guardians. That's my distilled understanding of him. Cultivated bad taste is how I would sum up Troma's final products. So it's not surprising to see him make those jokes.

I wasn't aware that he Tweeted like that. I'm sure Marvel/Disney and his manager shut that down as soon as there was a whisper about him at a lunch somewhere. You have meetings, training, and ongoing guidance with PR people when you're in control of a movie with that budget.

I'd be looking through and selectively deleting 19 years of posting on here if I ever had that kind of exposure. I'd be terrified that some bad joke would come back to ruin my career.

I think this move is some zero-tolerance collateral damage. I hope he can shrug it off and give us some more good movies.

Other sites are saying he was still posting pedo jokes/shit up until about 5 years ago. I have no way to confirm. But what a dumb ass.

The jokes don't bother me, but then again I don't have a problem with crude, obscene, and bad taste things like that when it's obvious what the context is.

I kind of get it from a Disney perspective and the perception that want to uphold, but one of those things where I think social media overreaction goes overboard and I question the limits of what should be deemed acceptable or not.

He was supposed to be at Comic Con to support a movie he's producing. Not sure if he will show up now.

Maybe early to already speculate on his replacement but Waititi may be a good option. He did great with Thor: Ragnarok and could probably come on board with the Guardians crew fairly seamlessly.

As much as I like the two films done by Gunn what a dumbass. Rose up from the small leagues of Troma to making huge Marvel films and gets his ass canned because he couldn’t resist putting his idiotic thoughts out in public.

I agree completely. Waititi would be the right choice.

And just to note, I do not believe this should be a career-killer for him. He's probably meeting with his PR team, will release some conciliatory statement and disappear for a bit to let this die down and then hopefully a studio will take a chance on him.

OTOH, I understand Disney's decision as well, not to say Lindsey Ellis, and it pains me to type this, doesn't have a point as well with Depp.

It's nice to see that we hold our directors to a higher standard than those running the country (into the ground).

Mike, you’re on to something here. You should be hired at DC.

But seriously. Taiki is the right choice. Not sure if he’d interested though. You need someone who is going to mesh wel with the cast. You can’t just bring in outsider for this. But we’ll see.

Disney is going to have to mandate everyone shut down their Twitters.

yeah, I totally agree. Silverman has been a target before, but not much came of it. I can see her history getting revisited by these clowns. She may not have a ton of poor-taste tweets, but yeah... her comedic material (on her various shows and stand-up specials) is right up there with Gunn's terrible jokes.

How so? Depp is on record as being physically violent and abusive to people, no? Gunn made some jokes. Shitty jokes... jokes that don't deserve any defense... but jokes. I think the point is fair.

I’d love to help clean up the shit show that is DC believe you me. So many wasted opportunities and stupid ass decisions.

I would think Waititi would be interested but who knows. The humor he incorporated for Thor is similar enough to Guardians (a bit different but I think it could be worked out). I’m not sure was the Thor/Guardians interaction all Gunn and the Russo’s or was Waititi involved with Infinity War? He obviously helped reshape Thor but I’m not sure if he’s had involvement beyond that.
