i saw the trailer prior to Creed II and it looks fucking fantastic. Rockwell as Bush? Bale as Cheney? fuck yeah it looked great. Bale is such a fucking chameleon. never looks the same in any role, sans Batman. one of the greatest living actors, imo...

I'd love to see him, as am adult, do a musical. Not sure if it would be something he might be interested in but if he found the right project, it would be interesting. Something serious like Fun Home. He sure had a nice voice as a kid.

Bale looks a lot like Chevy Chase both young and old.

The reviews are a bit all over the place. Some don't think it goes deep enough on Cheney as a person, others don't think it's something worth laughing about, and others think it's brilliant.

To be fair, it's not being advertised as a documentary.

I am curious as to how much B.O. business it does.
Very few, on either side of the political divide, think much of Darth Vader Dick Cheney.

McKay did such a great job on The Big Short, I have to watch this when it comes to NF.
I gotta give him credit in that he has taken on 2 subjects I (and others) have very strong feelings about and seemingly makes it work cinematically.

My local paper really slammed it. I'll be curious to what everyone here has to say.

Just got back from it and it was pretty good. The Big Short is a much better film but this was alright. Bale is phenomenal and I think he'll probably get nominated for an Oscar. I think the rough patches the film suffers from - would probably be the scenes towards the end featuring Amy Adams. Everything else was fine, with some seriously funny moments throughout.

Just saw this. Good stuff. Some pretty funny parts. Still haven't seen The Big Short so can't really compare them.

I might try to see this on Sunday. It's the last major release I have yet to see to end 2018.

This film is so surface level, it would be insulting but it's too flimsy to provoke that type of response. It's just so .. meh. And Bale morphing completely into the character just keeps you sort of entranced.

Sad that there aren't better scripts for Bale's talents. Feels like such a waste.

I thought this was alright. Decent I guess you could say. There were some great moments in it, like the scene where Jesse Plemons speculated what Cheney was thinking in that critical moment and obviously the roll credits scene. The flipside is that the Shakespeare scene didn't work at all. So yeah I liked it, however as a follow up to the amazing "The Big Short", I was majorly disappointed.

Re: Vice -- Dick Cheney biopic (2018, D: McKay) S: Bale, Carrell, Adams, Rockwell

I LOVED it. It might be crazy, but I personally think it should win Best Picture. I haven't seen tonal shifts this insane since "Natural Born Killers" and sets the mood for how insane that period of history was. The one thing I appreciated about it was what a haymaker of a reality check it is on the notion of Dick Cheney and the Bush Administration "not being that bad" in light of Trump and Co. This movie is like "fuck you, they were as bad as it got". As for people complaining that we didn't see much of the human side of Dick Cheney, I need to remind them: this is Dick Fucking Cheney we're talking about. The writing, the directing and the performances are solid and Bale is a shoe-in for Best Actor in a few months. It did something (with the exception of "Won't You Be My Neighbor?") no other movie did this year: it shook me up; it stuck with me.

P.S.--I love the revelation of who the master narrator was. I didn't see it coming.

Good point.
There hasn't been a more inscrutable, enigmatic American politician in generations.
He lets NOTHING out...including any sense of humanity.

I think Oliver Stone is better in the editing department than this one was, with the scattershot edits.

I just got back from this. It's okay. Honestly I'm not a big fan of political satires. But, the cast attracted me to this. Bale was excellent though as Cheney and Rockwell was also really good as G.W. Bush even though his role was minor.

I thought some parts dragged and I dozed off a few minutes in a couple of spots.

Not something I would ever watch again, but I appreciate the work that went into it and what Bale did to get ready for it.

I did at the fake out closing credits in the middle of the movie.

The narrator (Jesse Plemons) being the guy who saved Cheney's life was an interesting twist.

Did anyone catch the stinger after the primary closing credits with the fishing hooks? It was hilarious and depressing at the same time.

I said almost this exact thing to my wife. The fake credit roll fucking amazing. The Shakespearean scene was so uncomfortably terrible.
I liked this, but it's flawed. I think The Big Short was a masterpiece that I slightly preferred to Spotlight (though that was a close second and I didn't mind it winning BP).
