Michelle Trachtenberg is in her early thirties.
I would assume that DCEU Batgirl would skew a bit younger, like her early twenties. Might need to make her Jim Gordon's ganddaughter, though.

How so? I simply noted that in live action form the character so far has not made any significant impression with the mass general public. It's the equivalent to me of having a Black Widow movie released before the character ever appeared in any other Marvel movie. It would be a real unknown quantity and be a hard sell. I think the fans of Batgirl don't realize how limited in quantity they might be at this point in time. Of course that can change, but I can't ever recall anyone ever saying to me or reading online (prior to recent events) what the world really needs is a Batgirl movie.
Oh and the idea of a Bat Family movie is just wrong. I always saw Batman as a character that worked alone as much as possible. Now they want a Batman Shared Universe. No thanks.

As for Batman, maybe that's the way you've seen the character but in the actual comics it's funny how many other heroes are associated with him. I'm ok with it, mostly because i've loved so many of the supporting characters.

I like the idea of a Bat Family in an extended universe personally. Past films like the first two by Burton or the Nolan trilogy where they were set in a stand alone universe I didn't mind it just being Batman but there's a lot more to the character that can be explored through the Bat Family. I really like the idea of both Batgirl and Nightwing solo films personally. I think they can both be successful too as they probably will both feature Batman cameos at the least. Plus they're more known than some of the more random characters that have gotten films already.

Well guys I respect your opinions. Like most movies in production I always hope for the best, and if it can change my view on a subject/character then that's great. Let's see what happens with this one.

With some tweaking I could see Batgirl: Year One (the comic) being a serviceable way to introduce her.
Hard studying, working student/fan girl who adopts her persona to emulate a hero and the stumbles and bumbles a bit before getting her footing.
(I'm one of the few fans who actually liked MT on Buffy, and thought the character was an inspired addition, but she would be too old for something like this- if they are going for a year one style story)

Joss Whedon on 'Batgirl' and Exploring the "Damage" Behind His Next Superhero
"I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl," said the director of his upcoming DC project.
Avengers director Joss Whedon may be Marvel royalty, but all he can think about these days is DC's Batgirl.
The filmmaker sent shock waves through the comic book movie world when it was revealed in March that he will be writing and directing a Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. and DC, and at Wednesday's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere, he opened up about why the character was too good to pass up.
"She came up, and I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, what's her damage?" he told Heat Vision.
He noted that unlike Batman, Batgirl has no childhood tragedy that forced her into a life of crime fighting.
"She didn't have her parents killed in an alley. Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life?" he said. "How intense and driven that person is ... I just couldn't stop thinking about it."
Earlier this week, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed that Whedon called him to give him a heads up about his next project.
"He called a couple months ago, which he didn't have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him," said Feige. "And we couldn't be more supportive. We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film be awesome."
Several people have worn the Batgirl cowl in the comics, but the character readers are most familiar with is Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City Police commissioner Jim Gordon. The 2011 New 52 reboot brought Gordon back into the costume after an absence. And in 2014, she was given a notable costume upgrade: a pair of stylish, yellow Doc Martens. Will those make their way into the movie version?
"I don't know," Whedon said with a laugh, noting he's got many ideas floating around. "I have a lot of voices in my head."

Is Whedon on the Snyder/DC bandwagon of everything about the DCEU needs to be ultra dark and moody? I was excited for this but honestly that makes me a bit more iffy. I'm still curious but just an odd interview.

Not sure you should look into it that deeply. Just what attracted him to the character. I think for the Bat-verse, as long as they can get close to what Nolan did (with maybe something more fantastical versus reality based), then it should be fine. I don't want it to go the other end of the spectrum of silliness.

I don't think Batgirl should be overly dark though either. She's one of the more light hearted aspects of the Bat Family. Whedon did kind of place a lot of emphasis on how she came to be how she is and how she's damaged and what tragedies brought her to take on the mantle.

I don't really see how commenting on exploring her motives for doing what she does infers anything about the tone of the movie.

I still want to see it I just found the way he put so much emphasis on that aspect of her character somewhat off putting. I'm just hoping this film will be a bit more fun rather than bogged down by the same things that have plagued the DCEU films thus far.

"So much emphasis" and "off putting" off of a few quotes on what Whedon finds interesting about the character? You're not helping the running gag of you hating everything DC related
Plus given the tone we've seen Whedon put out in most of his works, i'd be surprised if we don't see something similar here.

As far as trusting Whedon I like him when he hits but I don't always think he's this geek god that some people do. I think he's a good choice and I hope he makes a good film but given the output we've gotten so far from previous films I think its fair to be skeptical until shown something of quality.

Considering like half that article is about that I'd say he's placing a fair amount of emphasis on it. Also I've expressed a lot of interest in both this and the Nightwing films. Again all I'm getting at is I don't want future DC films to continue down the same path. As far as me being a DC hater that's just dumb. I don't like their current films. A lot of people including fanboys feel the same way so it isn't like I'm in the minority. Batman is probably one of my favorite characters (not just in comics), I read more DC comics than Marvel, I've always been a huge fan of the DCAU, I've liked their previous films, and collect a bunch of stuff from DC (particularly Batman).

Anyway, of course half the article is about his quotes, there's nothing else to write about currently regarding the movie! That hardly means it's Whedon's emphasis, it just means some reporter asked him what interests him about the character. To extrapolate that in to the movie being dark and moody is so silly. As TheMovieman said, you shouldn't look into it that deeply.
And I don't think much of Whedon either, which I mentioned earlier in this thread. That part is irrelevant though, point is his tone has been fairly consistent from all his works and don't really see a reason to think it will change here; if anything, i'd say typical Whedon would match exactly what you want as far as humor and lightheartedness.

They sort of did that with the porn parody, but it wasn't rape. Joker banged the crap out of Batgirl in exchange for freeing Gordon. After he fucked her he still shot her in the back.
Oops, spoilers.
