Batgirl (D: El Arbi / Fallah) [CANCELLED]

‘Batgirl’ Movie: Joss Whedon to Direct Standalone Film (EXCLUSIVE)
Dave McNary Film Reporter @Variety_DMcNary
MARCH 30, 2017 | 09:30AM PT

Batgirl is flying solo. The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon.

Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.

No other producers are currently attached. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The new project originated in the past month.

Batgirl is one of the most popular superheroines in the world, but has never gotten her own movie. The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham.

Batgirl first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The Batgirl project will be the second movie from DC Films to star a female lead after Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” which opens June 2. Extensive footage was shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.

Whedon would be making a big move from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its DC counterpart, having written and directed “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for Disney-Marvel. He also created the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe launched with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” followed by last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad.” Its upcoming films, which have already been dated, include “Wonder Woman,”; “Justice League,” debuting Nov. 17; and “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa and hitting theaters in December of 2018.

The studio is also developing a “Suicide Squad” sequel and “Gotham City Sirens,” a spinoff to “Suicide Squad” with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character; “The Batman,” starring Ben Affleck with Matt Reeves directing; a “Shazam” film and a Black Adam spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson; and projects based on the Flash and Cyborg characters.

Whedon is repped by CAA.

Damn. You beat me to the punch by a minute, devilshalo! I'll ask a Mod to nuke mine.

I'm not a Whedon fan but I'm sure he'll do a fine job with this property. Seems more up his alley than Avengers was.

Wow, that's quite a coup.

Wonder who they'll cast -- if it will be a "name" actress or if they go with a largely unknown like they've done with Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League.

With Reeves' The Batman and possibly Vaughn directing (and probably writing) Man of Steel 2, maybe Mel Gibson's Suicide Squad 2, Warner seems to be going in the right direction with the DCEU 2.0 (as Jett from Batman On Film termed it). That's not to mention James Wan with Aquaman (from all I've read, he also has creative control).

You had me at both Whedon and Batgirl.

I'm on the fence with this... Whedon couldn't get his Wonder Woman off the ground. Is this to make up for that WB bungle? I know there are a lot of Whedonites out there. I'm not one of them.

This just got me thinking about directors movie from one shared universe to another and who at DC would be a good DC director to move onto a Marvel property....but then so far its only really been Zack Snyder, so not a great pool to pull from.

There are some B level characters that i don't feel deserve their own movie, and Batgirl is certainly one of them. I mean i couldn't even tell you who her arch nemesis was. I can understand that DC/Warners feel this is a good move as Batman is without a doubt their most successful property in the comic book field, but thats the problem, its basically a Batman movie...with tits. DC may have a lot of characters, but i feel far fewer are suited to movies than at Marvel. Too many that are just kooky.

Honestly this seems like a much better fit for Whedon as opposed to him doing Avengers films. Very interested in this. Wonder if they go with Barbara, Stephanie, or Cassandra. Barbara is the most well known but I'd think with where the DCEU films are Stephanie or Cassandra would make more sense.

Guarantee it's Barbara. She's the most well known and current, in comics and other media.

I was never as big on Whedon as a lot of internet folks seem to be, especially when everyone was giving him most of the credit for the MCU, but this is a good fit for DC and a good direction to go in as far as someone who obviously cares and respects the comic book character.

I tend to agree that's what they'll do but I wish she'd be Oracle instead and use one of the other two. I always liked Stephanie and Cassandra better as the character honestly.

Me neither, but the DC universe is such a clusterfucking disaster that having someone that at least knows what characters are, and co-wrote Toy Story, has to be an improvement.

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but between this, The Batman, Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, Nightwing, etc. it looks to me like WB is slowly backing away from the greater DCU and moving back to focusing on Batman and Batman related properties.

I think Aquaman will get made because they're deep in pre-production and have to start this year before Justice League is released, but if WW and JL don't perform up to expectations, I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the Justice League slate was placed on indefinite hold. (Nobody ever thought that they were really going to make a Cyborg movie, did they?)

Be that as it may, if it happens, Batman and Co could support its own cinematic universe.

I know it won't happen, but I'd blow my load if they went with Cassandra Batgirl.

re: Batgirl (D: El Arbi / Fallah) [CANCELLED]

Cassandra had the coolest look I think but I slightly prefer Stephanie.

It seems like DC is trying to get on track but I still think they need to actually start moving on things rather than just piling on more films to an already big list of unmade yet announced films.

Who's everyone's choice for Barbara Gordon? Is Alexandra Daddario too old?
