The filmmaker's explanation makes perfect sense. I can't believe this is even a "controversy". I'm so fed up with the state of media and society now that slathers everything in offended political outrage.

It seems to me it's just opportunistic political commentators who are always looking for something they can use to stir shit up so they can get views/ratings. And of course opportunistic politicians who want to virtue signal.

I originally heard about the controversy on a radio show, but it was reported "third hand" that they had changed the flag to something more generic (kind of a UN flag or something). Now that would be annoying. But if the flag, -when it is shown, -is the American flag, I don't have a problem, and probably wouldn't have given it a thought had it not been brought up. Of course, it has been brought up and it puts it in people's heads.
I saw an extended preview of the launch scene at my local IMAX theater a few weeks back and it was impressive.

I think it’s worth pointing out that the film has only screened one time, at the Venice Film Festival. So some rat fuck reporter who covers film festivals is the one who spun this nothing into a story.
When a story comes out with such a shabby pedigree (One guy at the Venice Film Festival says...) the press shouldn’t even run the story.
It’s a shame that most people’s first impression of this film will be tainted, “Isn’t this that movie that pissed off a lot of people?” Because it looks to be stirring and patriotic and a tribute to a brave hero. A film that might actually unite Americans. Which is something we could use right now.
The more I think about it, I feel like this was floated with the exact purpose of undermining the film before Americans get a chance to discover it themselves. Probably by some jealous nation that didn’t win the space race.

I just watched it again. They certainly emphasize the melodrama, but I don’t see anything added that didn’t happen. They show Armstrong ejecting from the lander and a fiery wreck. That happened. They show the Apollo 1 accident. That happened.

The Right Stuff is fantastic. It’s serious when it needs to be and comical at other times. A masterpiece of blending tones. This looks good, but also a bit too serious.

It's hard to say what the tone will actually be. Trailers can sometimes play up a certain angle much more than the actual film does.

I just saw a network ad for "First Man" last night and it managed to work in the American flag into several shots: a boyhood patriotic shot, glimpse of flag patches on uniforms, that sort of thing (I wasn't able to record it).

Bullshit! Unless it’s a Michael Bay-esque 360° rotating shot around an American flag at sunset I’m not watching it!

I saw an early screening of this tonight. Another winner for Chazelle. He’ll definitely be nominated again. I loved his approach to this. Not very typical in the way biopics normally go. Very impressive. It is most definitely a movie about Armstrong, not Apollo. All that bullshit fake outrage controversy stuff is ridiculous. Chazelle’s comments about this make total sense in the context of the film he made.
I loved the look of it too. A lot of period pieces have a glossy, slick look these days. But this just felt right. All the vehicles and props... Production design... top notch. That flight simulator looked like the real deal from the ‘60s and not a prop.
I imagine it would rock in IMAX.

Saw this tonight as well, it was fantastic. Very emotional, very moving. The only nit-pick I had was that

I have a feeling this one is going to bomb. I noticed my ArcLight theater had several Thursday night showings but now only have 1 showing and it's in one of the smallest screens at 8:30pm. I'm assuming the pulled most of them for not selling and shifted theaters around that were/are selling. I'm still seeing it this weekend but it's not gonna be on Thursday.

I wonder which one of this week's competing films' producers have paid for this social media bot attack?
Not serious. People are just stupid.

Surprisingly, Grace Randolph trashed it.
Not the biggest Chazelle fan, so I may wait a few weeks to see it, if it's still playing.

It's 89% on RT, seems pretty good to me. I don't know how much traction this would have either after the big openings of Venom and A Star is Born last weekend, but the budget wasn't huge for this at $59 million.

Who the fuck is Grace Randolph?
I gave it a try. She has emojis in her reviews and shit. She’s like an 11 year old.

NYU art school is okay, but she has no real film bona fides, and she’s a comic book writer.
Does she have like a personal top twenty film list or something I can judge her taste on? She strikes me as someone who’s never seen anything older than 1975.

Her all time personal top 3 plays like if I was trying to make a parody of vapid YouTube opinion people.
“I like Rear Window because I wrote a paper on it in film school. I’m proud of myself because I noticed little Easter eggs in it. Yeah for me!”

Dude, who cares if she didn't like it or not? Is it because she's a woman or something? I don't agree with every one of her opinions. I don't like that she supposedly does "live" trailer reactions, but it's peculiar that at the end of the reaction she has a powerpoint presentation regarding what was just watched. If it was live where did the presentation come from?
Is it because First Man has a 89%, so that means every critic has to like it? She didn't, I'll see it tonight and make up my own mind, and then we'll go from there.
