Last year my aunt and grandma died within about 24 hours of each other. Everyone was wondering if there would be a joint funeral, but we had to let my uncle and cousins be the ones to make the call (they decided on one funeral).

Singin' in the Rain is phenomenal... and then you remember Debbie Reynolds had to hold her own with both Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor and she was in her second movie at age nineteen!

If you want to see a superb performance from Debbie in her later years, Albert Brooks' Mother is one of my favorites.

First of all your 3 for 1 comment is classless as I often wonder why people need to make snarky remarks on the internet when someone dies? Would you say that in real life?

As for Debbie Reynolds, Singin in the Rain is always in top 10 all-time movie lists. She was nominated for an academy award and was married to Eddie Fisher, who left her for Liz Taylor.

The difference between Fisher and Reynolds is we grew up with Princess Leia and Debbie Reynolds was before our time so we don't understand the context of actors careers sometimes.

I saw her in Tammy probably in the years between the release of Star Wars and Empire (likely '78 or '79), and developed as much of a schoolboy crush on her as I had for Carrie.
That's also one of the handful of Universal titles left I still want the most on Blu-ray.

After Tammy, it was hard to catch her in other stuff. These were the years well in advance of us owning a VCR, so tracking down and viewing a star's filmography was almost impossible. You needed to scan every single line of the TV listings and even then it was up to the whims of the stations running the stuff.

Since home video, and TCM, I've had a chance to see her in many films.
I HIGHLY recommend The Gazebo with Glen Ford, The Catered Affair w/ Bette Davis, and Frank Tashlin's Susan Slept Here w/ Dick Powell.

She also had a prominent role in How The West Was Won, which I'll probably finally end up watching sometime in the next few days.

Haven't seen Unsinkable Molly Brown for which she got an Oscar nom, but I'll have to address that soon too.

On screen, she was a complete charmer.

She attended his wedding to his longtime partner a few months ago. I don't think they were estranged. Carrie just had custody after the split.

Yeah, it sounds like she just couldn't live without Carrie. Carrie was both her daughter and best friend from what I'm reading. She was everything to Debbie. What a heartbreaking story from last Friday on.

It's so depressing. I hope that Billie will be OK. No doubt she's a basket case right now (and understandably and justifiably so), but I hope she's got a good support system. Losing your mother and your grandmother in consecutive days? That's got to be utterly devastating.

She also played Grace's mom on Will & Grace, which is probably the only thing I've really seen her in.

I believe my dad actually met her and got her autograph when she was signing copies of her exercise video.

Also, unless your knowledge of film only goes back to the start of the millenium, Debbie Reynolds dying is a huge deal in the film world.

As some have already said, Reynolds was a bigger star than Carrie Fisher. Not to take anything away from Carrie, but it's true.

If you saw the Liberace movie with Michael Douglas you saw her as his mother.

And she was great as Albert Brooks' mother in Mother. So funny. I love Brooks, but I hadn't seen that film until this year.

I once did make a joke about a celebrity death in front of people who knew the deceased. I was unaware of that until after I made the joke. I realized in that moment that regardless of whether I knew the person or not, their passing deserves respect and empathy.
