Does an allowance count as "your own money"?
Regardless, I wouldn't have a clue. I started going to the movies on my own at such an early age (11 or 12), I have no idea what the first movie would have been...probably something like Star Trek II.

I grew up in a small suburb of Atlanta in the 70s. Tickets were only $1 for under 12s back then, and Raiders of the Lost Ark was there the whole summer of 1981. I think I saw it 27 times that summer, thanks to random odd jobs (washing cars, mostly) and my piggy bank.

I think it was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). It was right around the time after I got my driver's license and a friend and I went. It probably was also the first R rated film I saw in the theater as well.

First one I can remember is Diamonds are Forever in 1971. I would have been about 12 and I went with my next door neighbor. It is the first time I can remember going without my parents.

Either "Treasure of the Four Crowns" or "Jaws 3-D", both in 1983. Only PG-rated 3D movies out (REALLY wanted to see Friday the 13th Part 3 but that was rated R and there was no way in hell my parents would take me to see it), both at crappy theaters with mono sound but the 3D was still great. "Treasure" was my first exposure to polarized 3D; hope that gets a 3D Blu-Ray release!

I believe it was Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
