Well if Lonestar is included. I'll add:

I prefer Dennis Quaid over Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. Too bad Quaid couldn't have played that role in Tombstone...

To each their own. I liked Quaid as Doc, but the two films were very different and, for the type of film that Tombstone was, Kilmer was perfect.

So it's a modern-day western?

When I saw the thread title, my thoughts were:
No Country for Old Men
Blood Simple
Hell or High Water
Lone Star

If contemporary is counting, I'll toss in Extreme Prejudice.

I used to watch westerns on TV when I was a kid, even though I was harboring a sci-fi fanatic within me at the time. I've since grown out of the westerns and I'm full on a sci-fi/fantasy/horror geek, but westerns that I think are pretty good regardless are Tombstone () and Cowboys & Aliens ()

Ditto. One of my favorite Walter Hill movies, on a par with JOHNNY HANDSOME and TRESPASS.

And I don't think there's a decent R1 release of any type--DVD is full-screen, I believe.

Would Last of the Mohicans count as a western? Or is it too early?

I don't know--it's got a lot of the elements, but it's set in upstate New York.

Re: Favorite modern-day Westerns? (1980-now)

Love Silverado and I have a soft spot for The Quick and the Dead. Also thought Wyatt Earp was quite underrated. In addition, I guess I'm probably in the minority, but I really enjoyed Back to the Future III.

Sadly still have yet to see Tombstone. Not avoiding it but it has just never really been at the top of my must-see list, despite the fact that just about everyone I know loves it.

"It's a hell of a thing, killin' a man. You take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have."

"Yeah, I guess he had it comin'."

"We all got it comin', kid."

^That's some good shit, right there.

I watched Unforgiven for the first time in years a month or two ago and I forgot just how many powerful lines like that are in the movie!

I've held that opinion since seeing Wyatt Earp. Tombstone is spot on with the time, the place, and casting of the Earp brothers... but Kilmer stands out like a sore thumb. He just doesn't fit. Acting-wise, Kilmer looks like he's off doing his on thing while his cherubic appearance belies the notion of man suffering from TB. Quaid sunk himself so deep in the role, it's a surprise he didn't die of consumption.

Kurt Russell not only looks like Wyatt, but portrays him in a way that fits everything I've read about Earp. Very reticent, but a man of action when pushed too far. Costner's Earp is a cruel, vindictive man who won't shut up.

Now, back on topic, I'd add the new Magnificent Seven. Pros: Great cast and well made. Cons: Marred by idealogical, economic, politically-correct pandering, and stereotypical characters... especially a villain so ridiculously over-the-top he could have been portrayed by Snidely Whiplash.

Felt like I watched a two hour piece of political propaganda.

Anyone for a remake of Billy Jack?
