End of Summer WORST of All Time SHEEP GAME (with cruel TWIST)

My honest answer to worst book-to-movie adaptation would've been Pet Sematary. That book scared me to badly that I threw it across the room when I finished it. The movie is a total melodramatic, poorly acted crapfest.

I'm actually surprised that Bonfire of the Vanities didn't show up on the list. There are few adaptations I have seen take the critical beating that one did.

I already know I have the wrong answer for Smithee (I was thinking of Burn Hollywood Burn: An Alan Smithee Film). And I didn't really believe Mamma Mia and The Departed were really the worst, but I couldn't really think of others at the time (I like ABBA but figured Pierce Brosnan's singing might factor in, and I did get a match!).
Battlefield Earth was a popular answer in a recent game but did nothing for me here.

Shocked more people didn't answer with the Hobbit. One of the greatest books of all time was adapted into a 3-film plodding mess.

Here we are, the final question:
18. R: - Thank God he retired! Name a movie "directed by Alan Smithee".
For those who don't know (I suspect there might be a few) "Alan Smithee (also Allen Smithee) is an official pseudonym used by film directors who wish to disown a project, coined in 1968. Until its use was formally discontinued in 2000,[1] it was the sole pseudonym used by members of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) when a director, dissatisfied with the final product, proved to the satisfaction of a guild panel that he or she had not been able to exercise creative control over a film. The director was also required by guild rules not to discuss the circumstances leading to the move or even to acknowledge being the project's director.[2]" - Wikipedia.

I had no idea what would be sheepy here, but my kids happened to be watching this on Cartoon Network at the time I was filling out answers, and it really is pretty awful. I honestly can't believe that some people think the Grinch is worse than this. It's not even close for me.

This one breaks my heart.
Supernova
mwbmis
The movie was directed by the great Arthur Hill (The Warriors, 48Hours, Deadwood), who did have his name removed from the credits. unfortunately for mwbmis, by the time that happened, the DGA had "retired" the Alan Smithee pseudonym, he was credited as "Thomas Lee" instead.
Due to the precise wording of the question, I must, with a heavy heart, mark this incorrect.

I looked after I sent my answers in. As I said earlier in the thread, my answer was unfortunate.

Odd, I recently saw a 2015 movie that was credited to Alan Smithee. It was awful, so I get it, but find it odd that they went with that pseudonym, even if it was unofficial.

Well, now that's out of the way, time for some matching answers!

There was a 2nd Unit Director who used the name "Alan Smithee". However, the question was not "name a movie 2nd Unit Directed by Alan Smithee".
