Re: BBC's Top 100 films of the 21st Century (so far)

I've seen 58 of those films.

Spring Breakers being on there is a joke.

Also, I continue to be astonished at Fury Road getting so highly rated. It wasn't bad but top 20 in the last 15 years? Wow. Also didn't love Boyhood nearly as much as I thought I would as a fan of Linklater's "Before" trilogy, but I recognize the achievement of the film.

Yeah I could remove about 20 of the films on that list and replace them with what IMO are better films.

I would have put Cronenberg's History of Violence much higher. Such a perfect little gem of a movie. Short, to the point, no fat, perfect three act structure, great performances, mature approach to the material.

Also, Anchorman should have been on there.

Boyhood at number five? Was it ambitious? Yes. Did it say something interesting? Not really.

Damn straight. That one would easily be in my top 10.

Once (2007) and Moon (2009) would also be on mine, and possibly Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008), although I have only seen it once and would likely be more critical of it after a second viewing.

It is mostly the more populist films on the list, but I am still surprised that I have seen at least 19 films in their entirety...not bad.

I could list a couple dozen films that I would have included, but I'll just mention one in which I consider to be a glaring omission. And that is: High Fidelity. One of the most rewatchable films ever made.

I think it's actually an awful film if one was taking the premise at face value.

Spoiler:
Since he started the movie before Zachary's mom killed Zachary though his mom also killed Andrew he was still making a movie saying look your mom killed your dad and got away with it and is a crazy bitch who took advantage of him. Think for a minute though, what happens if Zachary's mom doesn't kill Zachary and gets away with the murder of his dad,he is basically making a movie saying the lady who is raising you should be in prison and here is XYZ of why you should hate her.

I've only seen those. 51 out of 100.

I agree, it's an emotionally devastating story that is not very well made due to it being so biased and manipulative.

I suppose I never did take it at face value, regardless of the title. I felt from the start that it was something cathartic for the filmmaker first and foremost, for better or for worse. Now knowing what to expect from the story, I admit I would probably come down on the "for worse" side if I choose to watch it again. It may have just been the perfect storm for me at the time (when I also had a toddler), similar to how The Road (2009) affected me much more the second time, a few years after I had become a father. (Come to think of it, I would also add that film to my list.)

I never revisit most of Michael Moore's films for the same reason.

Re: BBC's Top 100 films of the 21st Century (so far)

My turn to chime in on this terrible list.

3 There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007)

Seriously Overrated. Good acting, mediocre storyline.

19 Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller, 2015)

So disappointing, and was very much garbage compared even to Beyond Thunderdome."

25 Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000)

This whole movie was shit. The premise was beyond flawed as the dude was losing his memory every 15 minutes (or so) and would literally have to be staring at his tattoos literally every minute of the day just to keep a thought in his head, not to mention his plan - or whatever it was. It wasn't until the second viewing that I realized just how bullshit this movie was and tried to immediately put it out of my mind, just like I had the memento disease.

33 The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008)

Begins was better, and this movie would not be on here without the passing of Heath Ledger.

51 Inception (Christopher Nolan, 2010)
The ending was groan inducing and everyone has had enough of that bullshit. Nolans finger definitely wasn't on anyone's pulse when he put this turd together.

53 Moulin Rouge! (Baz Luhrmann, 2001)

Really? Why? Just why?

62 Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino, 2009)

The first couple of acts were good/okay. However, I completely lost interest when they got to the 3rd act with Hitler in the cinema.

67 The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, 2008)

Completely overrated and doesn't hold up even today.

68 The Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson, 2001)

Of all the Wes Anderson movies, they picked this one???

83 A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Steven Spielberg, 2001)

I call serious bullshit on this one. This is literally one of the worst movies I have ever seen in the cinema. I would have walked out had I not been on a date. That damn movie went on forever, and ever. Then, just as I was about to walk out, they took the movie to the future and it was another damn 20 minutes.

87 Amélie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001)

I just don't get this one at all. I tried to give it a chance, but no. Completely boring and I just don't get it. Might as well have put Napoleon Dynamite on the list in its place if you were just going to put a random terrible movie on the list that everyone seemed to love for about 15 minutes.

As always, you're insane. As for movie #83 you should've walked out anyway. Your mom would've met you back home for dinner.

I mostly agree with him. Especially moulin rouge. But A.I. is brilliant. It's a perfect litmus test for idiots. If you don't like it...guess what?

You're taste is questionable, too. I liked Moulin Rouge but haven't seen it in years, so don't know how it holds up now. I think A.I. is an underrated masterpiece.

I think AI is a fascinating, emotionally devastating experience, an amazing movie.

However, calling someone an idiot because they liked/disliked a certain movie is embarrassing. That's probably a much better litmus test for determining who the "idiot" really is.

Everyone who doesn't like it says stuff like:
"I didn't like the happy ending"
"It should have ended under the sea"
"I didn't like the aliens"
Or my favorite
"Spielberg rewrote the ending"

All just outrageously dumb (and false) assessments.

"I didn't like the aliens"

It took a few years before I realized that the "aliens" were actually really advanced AI beings.

Calm down people. Nobody is wrong or an idiot for liking anything on that list unless it is Memento, The Dark Knight and/or Inception.

My favorite handful of the century so far would include

Almost Famous
Memento
Moon
Life of Pi
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

so, half of them being there are solid.

I love Pixar, but I'd swap out Wall-e for the Incredibles. Wall-e just falls apart and gets too preachy in the third act. As for animation, Spirited Away in the mix is solid but I'm more partial to Secret World of Arrietty. I'd squeeze How to Train Your Dragon in there somewhere.

Stay on topic, having differing opinions and criticism is allowed, hurling insults at one another is not
