Remaking Ben-Hur for $100M with virtual unknowns cast in the leads seems like it'd be a slam dunk money maker. Can't believe that went awry.

How do they know the weekend totals when Sunday isn't even half over? When they release the actuals, its almost never off from these projections. Is it that predictable based on Friday/Sat?

The day Ben-Hur was greenlit, pretty much everyone cried "BOMB!" How is it that Hollywood can't see the obvious?

Christians really don't trust Hollywood anymore, so even a well-done Ben-Hur remake would have been tepidly received at the box office. I'm sure more people will check it out on home video.

Most films they can project based on past performances of similar films, and average Saturday-Sunday gains and drops.

Family and animated films tend to have a relatively even distribution of box office over the whole weekend, as do well-reviewed dramas. Action and horror films tend to be heavily front-loaded on the Friday, as do comedies to a lesser extent.
Friday's box office alone, combined with critics' reviews and the public's Cinemascore, can pretty much give you the entire weekend's box office to a pretty accurate figure.

Sad part is that Ben Hur got somewhat decent reviews. But not enough to attract any attention. It was a good weekend to save money as nothing is remotely worth seeing right now. However I am interested in Kubo.

I'm sure Ben-Hur looks absolutely magnificent on the small top-masked screens most new theaters have. Main reason I'm not bothering to go see it- since it's in 3D I'll buy the 3D Blu-Ray of course just to support that.

Many the vocal Christians on my Facebook have been posting how much they loved it and recommending it.

Yeah, I saw an article in the Ben Hur saying outreach to churches was maybe the only thing they got right.

I guess my top 3 surprises...
Sausage Party is number 2 at the box office after 3 weeks?
Wow. I'm just surprised for an R-rated animated comedy.
Thought Pete's Dragon might hold over a bit better.
Secret Life of Pet's....a bit surprised it's made this much money. I took the wife and kids and we thought it was decent but not the huge hit it's become. I don't know many family's that talk about it much after seeing it, unlike Frozen, which is only slightly above Pet's right now in USA gross.
A big not surprised....Ben Hur. Who green lighted this one?

Pets also passed Zootopia domestic this weekend.

True about Pets, though there is a sequel set for release July 13, 2018.
