Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. The cast also includes, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.
Slated for release on November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I still have yet to watch all of the first one but this one looks fantastic to me. I'll have to watch the first just so I can see this one.

If nothing else, this new one at the very least looks real fucking pretty. The visuals were pretty striking in that trailer.

Yeah, FBAWTFM was sort of underwhelming. Not bad by any stretch, but it didn't feel fully realized.
There were also a couple of things I thought were jarring.
One, this was the first Wizarding World story that wasn't told from the point of view of children and young adults. It's sort of strange to see adults operating in this world.
Two, the lack of familiar characters. Apart from Grindlewald, everyone was a new character. Newt Scamander was mentioned a couple of times in the books, but he's still a new character.
And, in the new trailer, does anyone else think Dumbledore looks weird in a suit?

I was meh on the first movie but that looks really cool. The Nagini part was really neat.

Yea... the first movie was a let down, IMO. Felt too much like setting up for future movies. The music in the trailer was tight.

Looks very good.
Hopefully this is the kind of movie that builds on its predecessor in ways that improve FBAWTFM in hindsight.

Hey @jk_rowling I'm with you!

Nagini can be whatever she wants to be! She's a strong woman/snake.
Also, can you write me into the next movie? I'm Macaulay Culkin (From Home Alone: The Movie) and I was also a Pagemaster (experienced with magic)...

I loved the first one, I felt it really benefited from the producers saying "okay, Harry Potter style magic, but by skilled adults".
I'm hoping they can keep this going for the planned 5 movies, I think they will be a great part of the Hogwarts saga when all is said and done.

Have the first in 3D, but yet to see. I like the HP series, but really love Part VII both parts.

Rotten Tomatoes is filled with movies their critics didn't like but the fans loved. I enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts movie, this one looks just as epic and entertaining as any other HP movie, the trailer looked great, I think I'm going to enjoy this...

I think it may be time for them to consider bringing in a new director. Yates has been serviceable, but after 6 films with him, they could really use a visionary to put some new life into this ala Cuarón/Azkaban. It also wouldn't hurt to have someone co-write the script with Rowling. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like that will be done.

I find Yate's directing to be flat, but I think he's already signed for the next few entries if they come to pass.

Ouch.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is yet another disappointment in this prequel saga to the Harry Potter series. It brings back the entire surviving cast of the first film and then separates them for most of the picture. It undoes almost every major plot turn of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to the point of rendering that film narratively irrelevant. It is so focused on the grand five-part epic that it forgets to tell a story for this specific installment. It is a rambling, shiftless middle-chapter of a five-part saga where absolutely nothing of consequence happens or is revealed until the final reel, turning this franchise into the cinematic equivalent of a “paced for the binge” Netflix series.

Yup. Reviews were spot on. This was bad. Mostly exposition and no plot. I kept waiting for it to kick into gear and it never really does... and then it's over... A lot of convoluted nonsense.
This is what happens when you turn what should've been 3 movies into 5... and are more worried about making sequels than just a good movie.
Rowling needs to hand over writing duties to someone else.

So more or less The Hobbit to Potter's LOTR.

I didn't care for the first one much at all, and wish it even approached the level of the Hobbit films, which weren't great but overall I still enjoyed them. Disappointed that this one might actually be worse than the boring first one.
