Is it me, or did Ice Age underperform?

They have been churning out those ice age movies every few years. They are getting progressively worse, so people are just fed up with them.

GB has passed it's budget now... sitting at 158m worldwide. Probably looking at a low 200's final gross...among the lowest of the big budgeted films of the summer. (along with BFG)

The domestic take is not going to make it. I'd say it tops out around 120m if they are lucky.

The studio spent next to nothing in advertising, and releasing it in an already busy summer season with Dory and Pets was silly. It was essentially dumped. I haven't seen any of them except the first; never cared for it too much.

Oh I was referring to worldwide. Agree domestic should finish around 125. It's the foreign totals that are really sinking it, maybe 100m tops for that.

Big drop for Star Trek. It may be time to give the franchise another rest. Beyond is easily the worst of the JJ-verse films, and I would place it in the lower 3rd of all the films.

200m worldwide would make it a sizable money-loser for Sony. At about $200-250m in budget and marketing, it probably needs to clear about $450m or thereabouts.

I disagree with that. I'd place it as the best Trek movie since Star Trek 6. At least the best since First Contact. It's the most Trek-like of all the JJ era movies.

Yeah, I've heard some of my friends say that it is the best of the reboot movie so far, but I haven't seen any of them so I can't judge.

You're forgetting that half of a movie's BO goes to the theater. So if GB does $200 million WW, that means the studio only gets about $100m. It will need cable, home video, etc, to crawl over the profit line.

I know, I was pointing out how much of a bomb it is. That extra revenue won't be enough. Bombs away Sony!

I heard that the merchandise for Ghostbusters is selling really well though.

Merchandise will most likely pay for a lot of it's marketing costs.

Ghostbusters not opening in China was a huge disaster for Sony.

It feels like if a movie isn't Star Wars, a super hero or a low budget horror flick, it'll have no shot of making back it's initial spend in the US.

Animated movies generally do very well too, Ice Age is an exception

#1 grossing Domestic movie this year is Finding Dory with $469m
(#2 is Captain America 3 with $407m, #3 was Deadpool with $363m, #4 was The Jungle Book with $362m, #5 was Zootopia with $341m... so being Disney helps too.)

But basically either your movie does extremely well or doesn't come close to breaking even.

Trailers have gotten really bad this year too, with big budget movies like Jason Bourne and Star Trek Beyond focusing almost entirely on visuals over attempting to make it seem like there's a plot worth seeing.

Most of the stuff I have read/saw, the classic line is selling very good. Target had the GB16 toys on clearance for weeks now.

Eh, the Funko Pop figures are doing really well, especially of the current Ecto-1 and Kate McKinnon's character. Otherwise I don't follow toys closely enough to know for sure.

Funko Pop figures tend to do very well, even for somewhat less popular licenses. Especially the Rides series. Many people (myself included) are collecting that entire line.

I stopped in to Target today and the current GBs weren't on clearance. I wonder if that is just in select stores.

I think Target noted that it was a mistake, it was on clearance prior to the movie release.

A friend works at Target, so don't know if this is true or bs.

Fact- all GB16 toys went on clearance at all Targets(reported on collector sites that clearance was country wide). Soon after all items are regular price and you can see the red tags were peeled off.

Truth?- was told Target bulked at the backlash(which is true on toy sites and social media, people were throwing the typical crap because females and whatnot) and made all stores peel tags off and price back at regular.

Target has a habit of putting toys on clearance even before movie comes out, when it seems like it will be a dud. And its usually around this time while they can slip them all in with their reset clearance.

The last ButtPirates movie, target clearance weeks before movie dropped. Got my son all the GI Joes from last movie on clearance the week movie came out. So they do it all the time.

This is nothing new, but studios don't know how to keep their budgets in check anymore. The original Ghostbusters cost $30m, and while not cheap for the time, is a far cry from $155m for the reboot. Add to this that competition for movies has increased with other forms of media, it seems unjustified that these budgets keep going up and up and up. Depending on the international market for these tent pole times is a necessity. I get why Disney has acquired so many studios/properties and stick to these big movies; they make them a lot of money, and they seem like they know what they're doing. And even not, for every Alice in Wonderland or BFG for Disney, there always seems to be a movie that is released soon after that will cover that loss and then some that makes thoses losses seem irrelevant. And like someone said, animated films do well, but not only that, they're cheaper than even some live action comedies these days, which I find laughable when you consider comedy can have a very limited profit potentional for a lot of overseas markets. That's probably enough of a rant for now.
