Why? A movie like Crazy Rich Asians did just fine without it. I don't think that matters as much these days.

The original Mimi in Rent! And one of the few of the originals not to do the movie.

The inclusion of Jimmy Smits is like Christopher Walken in the Jersey Boys movie: a familiar face on the periphery while the others do the heavy lifting. Plus there’s Miranda himself, of course.

And yes, I realize I’m responding to old comments. ITH isn’t Hamilton, of course, but it’s a great show that I’ve seen a couple of times. Bummer about the delay, but that’s the world we live in.

Re: In The Heights (2021, D: John M. Chu)

I will reply as well to that old post :
Movie musicals are different. I said that about Jersey Boys as well. People don't go to musicals to see songs performed on the big screen. They go to see STARS sing and perform on the Big Screen. Put superstars like Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe in Les Miz and you get a hit. Put pre-fame Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum in Phantom - not so much. Beyonce and Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls - hit. Rosario Dawson + the original cast of Rent in the movie version - bomb.
Of course, even big names don't always mean Hit Musical. Just ask James Cordon, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba and Dame Judy Dench. But it helps.

Lin Manuel is a big enough name to maybe carry this on his own. But it would have helped if he appeared in it. Or if it had more stars.

Sounds Hamiton-ish....

This looks pretty good, and at the very least, well made. I'm looking forward to seeing this. I know nothing about it, other than it's Miranda's first Broadway musical he made.

Why are they putting out reviews two months ahead of the release?

Only social media reactions, not official reviews. Trying build buzz I guess. WB must be confident in it to have be screened this early.

Saw an online preview screening of this last night. It was good. I really liked the story and the characters, but wasn't into the music as much as Hamilton. I'll definitely watch it again when it comes out for real, though.

Saw this on Broadway several years ago with Lin Miranda in the lead. Absolutely psyched for the film version.

I was watching Talking Movies on BBC America and one critic said this could be one of the 2022 Oscar favorites along with the Spielberg version of West Side Story.

Movie sites love speculating that musicals are BP favorites even though only one musical has won the big prize in the past 50+ years.

Re: In The Heights (2021, D: John M. Chu)

WOW. Never saw the Show or even heard any music/songs from the show. Just watched the Cinemark preview and not really into musicals but let me tell you...this was an amazing movie..if I had to rate it 1-10 I would give it an 11. The grandma/ old lady scene towards the end had this active duty military guy teary eyed. The movie/musical really is about family...home..dreams and love. Don't watch it at home..see it on the widest scope screen and loudest sounding auditorium you can find.

Re: In The Heights (2021, D: John M. Chu)

There were free mother's day screenings for this today in some select theaters. I'm seeing a lot of very positive reaction. I got an email about it earlier in the week, but I'm working today.

I wasn't 100% sure if I wanted to see this in the theater or not or just save money and watch it at home on HBO Max, but I think I'm going to see this on the big screen. Sounds like a real crowd pleaser.

I'm sure it's gonna be great - the show itself is incredible and they've got the right people involved in making this.

I was not a fan of Crazy Rich Asians, so I was less than thrilled when the directing choice was announced, but I am glad to see it came out so well apparently.

I can’t fucking wait to stream this. If Riders of Justice (which I’m gonna watch imminently) doesn’t blow me away like Another Round did, this could be contender for favorite of 2021.

Even though I don’t usually watch movies on work nights, I will make exception for this. Can’t wait to stream Thus, 6/10! Around 7 ish pm EST.
