Re: Ghostbusters (2016) - The Trailer
I really think a lot of the problems people have with this project could have been solved by making this movie a pseudo-sequel/soft reboot versus a straight total reboot. Imagine if McCarthy's or Wiig's character was playing the daughter of Ray or one of the other original Ghostbusters. The ghosts return to NYC, she digs the old equipment out and as a scientist herself, has to make updates for it. She surrounds herself with other women because she knows these women from work and other things and already knows their strengths.
The cameos from the old cast would serve a better purpose AND you'd have an actual storyline reason why the new team was all women. You wouldn't have to harp on the 'next generation' angle but just use it enough to appease the nostalgia but also allow the newbies to shine. Maybe even throw in a poignant scene where Venkman and Ray say they couldn't do it without Egon, which would give a good storyline reason why they weren't getting into the action themselves and passing the torch to the ladies.

yet the marketing seems to be going out of its way to milk the original.
2. It's marketing
That's what they do. I'm not defending it, but man... it's like some people have forgotten how big budget Hollywood works sometimes, especially in studios that have no shame about this kind of thing.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016) - The Trailer
I'm a little late to this party but after watching the new trailer, I couldn't be more disinterested in this follow-up to two beloved movies. I am sick of the sexism BS and the racism BS...it's tired, cliched and a symptom of a lazy, politically correct mindset run amok. It just looks awful. To borrow a hackneyed line from the trailer, "It's not a race thing or a lady thing" but I have no interest in seeing this film and I'm not gonna be preached to or put on a guilt trip because of my decision. It's time to move beyond this crap. If I don't want James Bond to be a black dude or Superman to be gay does not make me a racist homophobe (especially because I happen to be gay and have a man crush on Henry Cavill).
A former friend of mine criticized me for being racist because I wouldn't go see "Straight Outta Compton." He didn't ask me specifically why...just decided I must be a racist. It's like being called racist or anti-immigrant because you want secure borders and people emigrating legally. That nonsense pisses me off to no end. I have no time for that kind of ignorance.
If you want to find racism, sexism and homophobia around every corner, you certainly will. Woody Allen brilliantly illustrated this paranoia in his film "Annie Hall." To quote a famous exchange between Woody Allen and Tony Roberts from the screenplay, "You know, I was having lunch with some guys from NBC, so I said, 'Did you eat yet or what?' And Tom Christie said, 'No, JEW?' Not 'Did you?'...JEW eat? JEW? You get it? JEW eat?"

Re: Ghostbusters (2016) - The Trailer
It's contrived.
It isn't organic to the story. Why would it just be a bunch of women? What, no men were interested? There weren't men on the science faculty at the college? And, of course, the final nail in the coffin for anything other than this being a marketing stunt, a gimmick, is the casting of Chris Hemsworth (in a role that Tony Randall would have been perfect in 45 years ago) as the male Janine.
And the pushing of the pics with only the women in the cast and crew with signs of, "Girl Power," made this seem like nothing but an agenda put on digital video.
So, yeah, a lot of long time Ghostbusters fans are going to be pissed about that. They couldn't get a G3, despite Akroyd and Reitman spending a decade working on it, but about 3 seconds after someone says, "All Female Ghostbuster Team," it gets greenlit? It's contrived. And that's why it's going to be so damned bad. Because they were trying to shoehorn a gimmick into an old script, and they used the maximum number of cliches possible while doing it. None of the stuff we've seen is the least bit clever or funny. It's just stupid.

This post is pure nonsense. Right up there with the backpack post. Do you really think it's unbelievable that 3 or 4 women would go into business together? Or that it's even the slightest bit less believable than 3 or 4 men going into business together?
You're one of the people I was talking about earlier. I don't believe that you think you're sexist. It's apparent to everyone that you jump through all kinds of mental hoops to rationalize this shit.
The reality is, that inner rationalization is completely worthless. To the rest of us it's blatantly sexist. Cartoonishly sexist, even.
If you think 3/4 women forming a business that requires them to wear backpacks strains believability then guess what? You are sexist. No point in dancing around that fact.

The discussion, derision, and controversy about this film is the only thing entertaining about it. NEVER close this thread.

Instead we get this sort of confused feel to this film's messaging... they claim it's this straight-up reboot, but yet the marketing seems to be going out of its way to milk the original.

In a way it does remind me of Kael...at her worst. She famously accused the filmmakers of Gimme Shelter of staging Altamont and inciting violence so that they could film it and make their documentary. A theory entirely fabricated in her imagination that she flung at the filmmakers for reasons that other critics still don't fully understand.

(By the way, us manginas get laid. Maybe instead of constantly whining about how no woman will fuck you, you should consider switching sides.)

You are making the argument for the other side - the fact that it is 4 women is a gimmick/contrived/unrealistic when 4 men is never once questioned. Yet you fail to see how sexism plays into the criticism of this movie. You yourself are questioning why women are Ghostbusters instead of men.

Just ignore him. There's like three kooks in this thread who have very extreme views waaaaayyyy out at the fringes in both directions on the issue of women as it relates to this film. The rest of us need to stop being goaded into replying to them.

Yes. But the tide is turning. It isn't used as a crutch as much as a "threat." A threat of being labeled, ostracized and marginalized if you do not "goose-step" to their way of thinking. I'll have none of it and I confront these people at every turn. It's actual a simple process to pull back the curtain and reveal their insecurities.

Okay, so you're saying that the movie is being made for the majority of people out there who don't think like you. What's the problem, then? Why should your "handful" get to decide what movies the rest of us get to see?
