When I saw earlier this year that Asa Butterfield would be in this movie, I bought the three books of this series to get to know the story. I am really looking forward to this movie.

Caught the 3D version this afternoon. Very much a Tim Burton movie. That said, three things are evident:
-This is basically X-Men re-imagined as a Tim Burton film.
-Eva Green is playing a role that would have been played by Helena Bonham Carter about five years ago
-Burton's ultimate plan is to tap that (Green), with good reason.
Even though she gets top billing, Green is only in about a third of the film. Butterfield is front and center and while he is promising, he's not ready for leading man just yet. Seems like they're trying to turn him into a teen hear throb.

P.S. I think that if they ever decide to finally make a movie of the BioShock game series, Tim Burton is the man to do it. Unrelated , I know, but some of the shots and character design reminded me of the game.

I was very disappointed in this one. This probably worked as a book, where you could indulge in a lot of character detail and deeper explanations of the time-loops.
Burton spends a lot of time dryly setting up the story, -the shift between time-lines, -and some of the (comedic) confusion it causes, but essentially drops it to focus on the action of the second half. For example, his relationship with his father is key to the first half of the film and pretty much entirely dropped in the second half.
Through no fault of his own, I feel like Sam Jackson has been over-used in this kind of villain role, and it just didn't do anything for me.

Fuck no. I like Tim Burton but keep him far away from Bioshock. Guillermo Del Toro would do a great Bioshock.

Meh, it was OK. Sam Jackson ruined it, imho. The tonality shifts were very strange to me. It for the most part seemed like a serious movie, but then when Sam came on, he seemed kinda goofy? I dunno, seemed like that part needed to be recast, and re-written.

This movie was sooooo boring. After Big Eyes, this is a step back for Burton.

"Boring" is the description I hear the most for it

I found this movie to be rather dull. Also, anyone that has been to Blackpool knows that in this modern age is a shithole populated by drinks on piss ups. Made me laugh seeing the place of the climatic ending.

I think I saw one commenter say the movie is too scary for kids, too boring for adults. Seems about right to me. I don't think I'd watch this with either of my kids (4 and 5), and it took me more than one attempt to finish the movie by myself.

I watched this tonight and I thought the book was much better. They changed characters around. In the book Emma has fire abilities not air abilities. I generally liked the movie, but I thought the main character was very bland. Also, the ending is completely different. The book leaves things very open ended and I thought the movie wrapped everything up. I give it a 3/5.

This movie was chore to get through. Those twins who turn people to stone could have ended this conflict the moment the Barron walked into their house. And the lead character had dumb powers.
