Little House on the Prairie (D: Durkin)
A movie based on the long-running “The Little House on the Prairie” television series is in the works at Paramount Pictures, which picked up the project in turnaround.
Sony Pictures had launched development of the project in 2012 with Scott Rudin attached to produce. The title was put into turnaround last year after Amy Pascal stepped down as co-chair of Sony Pictures Entertainment with Tom Rothman replacing her.
Variety reported in June that Rothman had axed the “Little House” project due to concerns about its proposed $45 million budget.
Sean Durkin is attached to direct from a script by Abi Morgan. His credits include “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”
Morgan’s credits include “Shame,” “The Iron Lady” and “Suffragette.”
“The Little House on the Prairie” ran on NBC from 1974 to 1982 and starred Michael Landon as the head of a pioneer family in the 1880s in Minnesota. The series was based on the series of children’s books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, who published eight books between 1932 and 1943 based on her childhood in the northern Midwest during the 1870s and 1880s
Melissa Gilbert played Wilder on the show as the second oldest of four daughters. Landon portrayed Charles Ingalls as a farmer and mill worker. He directed 87 of the 203 episodes. His wife, Caroline, was portrayed by Karen Grassle.
The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Well, it will be directed by the guy who helmed Martha Marcy May Marlene so it could be dark in tone.

The only way I'd see this if it had the Miller & Lord treatment

Hopefully they won't tone down the violence like they did in the T.V. series

45 Million is actually a bargin as adjusted for inflation the tv series budget was 20 mill alone just for Michael Landon's Hair Stylists.

I think this could be a winner. There is a shortfall of quality smart family movies out there.
The key is, will they make it like that....

Wasn't there a recent revelation that Wilder toned down the stories for the books? That there was actually more darker events that happened? They were in the pioneer days, it wasn't exactly puppies and rainbows.

Pa is out farming the crops when he falls and breaks his back. The family lays him in the back of a wagon and have to travel a hundred miles to the nearest doctor so he can push his vertebra back in.
Or some bank robbers rob the local bank and the only thing they steal is the deed to the Ingals land which causes them to lose everything.
Or outlaws hold a group of church goers hostage in a church and a bunch of gamblers, whores and whiskey drinkers at the bar and make each decide who gets blown up with a bunch of dynamite.

The co-writer of Shame and the director of Martha Marcy May Marlene/producer of Afterschool & Simon Killer. This could be interesting.

Re: Little House on the Prairie (D: Durkin)
Hmm. This could actually be interesting. A number of years ago, I worked at a newspaper and wrote a DVD review column. Anyway, I was given a DVD of what was then the new miniseries/TV movie of Little House on the Prairie. I was dreading watching it. Just thinking about it took me back to my sister's obsession with the TV show and how much I disliked it as a kid. But I forced myself to watch it, and I was actually very surprised at how good it was. It was a very solid piece of family entertainment. It's not one I'm itching to revisit, but it's worth checking out. It might bode well for the new adaptation
