Apparently, some people took offence to Chill Wills' garish ad campaign.

Another vote here for S.o.t.L. being massively overrated. If only they had silenced that dreadful ham Hopkins.

That movie is a classic. You're probably just examining it in retrospect, as Hollywood has spent 25 years trying to rip it off and/or offer variations of the settings and the characters.

Definitely, though I don't love Manhunter either.

Not at all. I didn't think much of it at the time. It's well-made and all, but everyone was talking about how scary it was. I watched it and thought, "♪Is that all there is?♪" Plus, Hopkins's overacting just annoyed the hell out of me.

Don't disagree. I just watched most of it again recently and it is hardly an exemplary film, but it does achieve brilliance in places.

There is a scene in which Lector uses a phone intended for him to call his lawyer to find out Graham's home address instead. Cool, precise, charming and creepy.

Yeah, his statement is groundless. I specifically remember seeing SotL in the theater and remember my reaction to it then and my later befuddlement when it won BP the following spring. My opinion of it has not changed at all over the years. I enjoy watching it again periodically as it certainly is a good, entertaining movie, but I have never considered it great.

I saw it when it came out and thought it was good but not great. I was actually shocked it won so many awards.

I have seen it a few times since and still hold that view.

I would have given the Oscar to Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.

Don Johnson was robbed of a nomination!

Off topic, but there's a GREAT new interview with Mickey Rourke on Alec Balwin's "Here's the Thing" podcast. He name drops "Marlboro Man" as the worst movie he's ever done.

Nominated Tom Cruise instead of Dustin Hoffman for Rain Man
Nominated Denzel Washington instead of Tom Hanks for Philadelphia

Agreed. They had the better roles, while the nominees were more of the premise actors. Not to say Hoffman or Hanks weren't good or even great in their roles, but Cruise and Washington had more growth, or had more to bring to the table than just what their characters represented.

Oscar Isaac should have gotten a supporting actor nomination for Ex Machina.

Mesmerizing performance. He just disappears into the role. We watched it recently at home, and my wife didn't even recognize him as Poe Dameron when we went to see Force Awakens.

The dance sequence alone is Oscar-worthy :eyebrow::

1976's "The Shootist" not even getting nominated for best picture, was one of the academy's worst offenses.

I know there isn't a lot of love for the film here, but after watching HR Pufnstuf this morning, I remembered that I always thought Jack Wild gave the best performance ever by a child actor as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! I haven't seen Jack Albertson in The Subject was Roses, but I cannot fathom it could compare to the work Wild did as a child in that film.
