Re: If the Oscars had a do-over?

There are way, way too many instances of films, actors, etc winning over more deserving ones. Case in point is 1976, when all 4 of the other nominees for best picture deserved to win over Rocky.

Also, I just wanted to say that Annie Hall winning over Star Wars was both gratifying and frustrating. Gratifying because it deserved the award over Star Wars. Frustrating, because since then, (and for the rest of my life), Star Wars fans will be whining about it Ad nauseam.

Usual Suspects over Braveheart in 1995?

Toy Story should have gotten a Oscar nom but that was probably ahead of its time where animated movies are now treated with a lot more respect when it comes to awards.

Joan Allen (Nixon) should have won over Mira Sorvino (A Might Aphrodite)

Nic Cage won but Anthony Hopkins as Nixon would have been a good choice.

Maybe Cage should give up his Oscar since except for a couple of big blockbusters his career as a serious actor took a nosedive.

I would argue that he should have been nominated a few years ago for "Joe."

It got nominated for best original screenplay, and Babe (not exactly animated, but not typical) was nominated for Best Picture that year. Beauty and the Beast was a BP nom a few years prior.

If anything, relegating animation to their own category seems to be putting them at the kid's table. Although Up and Toy Story 3 did get BP noms (when there were 8+ nominees though)

He was on a roll in the 90's and peaked with TSH. His next film Felicia's Journey was good, but after that it's downhill.

I always thought "Exotica" was Oscar-worthy as well.

Re: If the Oscars had a do-over?

Fanny and Alexander is really a non-starter, much like Dekalog or Shoah. It wasn't orginally presented in film format.

All of those three are brilliant pieces, and worthy of view.but isn;t that like saying Breaking Bad is a great film piece, if you ignore the fact it was a TV show?

Only if you can come up with a 2.5 hour condensed version and give it a theatrical run.

For one second, I don't contend that "Pulp" isn't a better film, I just think that "Gump" needs some historical perspective.
Seriously? Gump is one of the most subversive insidious and least uplifting movies ever. It is a hateful, horrible movie with maybe the worst message of any movie i have ever seen. It is evil and I completely hate it. It should be destroyed

What about the movie is insidious, evil, and hateful? I can't respond until I know your context.

I loved "Exotica" and Egoyan and Egoyan's films then became "Must See"s for me. However, I never enjoyed any of his films to the same degree, and now I don't really even bother with them.

As for "Gump",- years ago my parents wanted to see the film because they'd heard so much about it and I rented it for them; they had a VCR but knew jack about operating it. My mother found the film sad because a good friend had a son "like that" and she just found the whole movie tragic.

1968 take the Oscar for Best Actor from Cliff Robertson for Charley and give it to Peter O'Toole for The Lion in Winter.

My wish would be for Goodburger to get nominated and win over that crapfest Titanic.

Julia Roberts having an Oscar makes them immediately irrelevant but her winning over Ellyn Burstyn makes it even worse.

Maybe Marisa Tomei should have lost the award for My Cousin Vinny but she redeemed herself with the Wrestler a movie she should have gotten a Oscar nomination.

Re: If the Oscars had a do-over?

Sydney Greenstreet in THE MALTESE FALCON over Donald Crisp, HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY

Claude Rains in CASABLANCA over Charles Coburn, THE MORE THE MERRIER

Marjorie Main as Ma Kettle in THE EGG AND I over Celeste Holm, GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT

Peter Falk, Sal Mineo, Telly Savalas, Victor Buono, Nick Adams and Bobby Darin all got nominated for Oscars. How awesome if any of them had won. Jack Palance got nominated twice.

She did get an Oscar nomination for that role - her third one overall.
