Red Dawn was the first film to be released as PG-13, but it was TOD (and Gremlins) the prompted the creation of PG-13. Spielberg directed TOD and was the EP of Gremlins and argued hard for an intermediate rating.

Hollywood thought it was funny. Joe Pesci set them straight.

Most of the obvious one are already posted so The Ring?

Can't the dumbing down(PG-13-ifying) of the horror genre be traced back to its success?

Re: Post movies that changed Hollywood.

Gone with the Wind: Set the template for all blockbusters that followed and is still the highest grossing film in history (adjusted for inflation).

Winchester '73: James Stewart broke his studio contract and made the unheard of move to become an independent. Universal couldn’t afford his asking price for starring in the film so Stewart had his salary tied to the gross of the film. This quickly became the standard practice and continues today.

The Robe: The first movie filmed in anamorphic WS, a process developed to counter the infringement of TV on the movie going public.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy: Brought the fantasy film into the main-stream. Sure there had been hundreds of fantasy films with good box office but this one changed the whole fantasy film game.

I thought that was the work of The Sixth Sense and The Others personally. And I think Neutering is the better term there than dumbing down.

The Ring did usher in an era of remaking every Asian horror film in the US (The Eye, The Grudge, Pulse, Dark Water, Shutter, A Tale of Two Sisters, One Missed Call, etc; ) 90% extremely poorly.

Outside the three Hobbit films, has there really been that many pure Fantasy films after LOTR than before?

Seems the LOTR and Hobbit movies are just success outliers, rather than setting trend.

I actually enjoy the movie. The silent sections of the movie and the music sections make it quite a surreal experience. But in 1927, Only the talkie sections was what everyone remembered the movie for back then.

Do you mean the classic fun montage w/ the music and such (Rocky style) or just training montage as a general?

Can't believe no one posted this. Pretty much killed the American Western genre, or at least the whitewashing of the era.

In addition it was a huge hit. The Star Wars of westerns. All studios began cranking out westerns by the hundreds making it the most popular genre for 20 years. A popularity which translated to tv.
