When I'd first heard about this movie, it didn't really appeal to me and I didn't have much desire to see it. It soon became "THE movie to see" after major theater chains decided not to show it after threats from hackers started pouring in over its political content. Sony was threatened with a few bad things if they released the movie, and theaters were afraid that there'd be bombings or shootings if they showed it.

Some independent theaters ended up showing it, and it was quickly made available online at the same time. (One of the online movie providers, I forget which one, said they were a bit afraid to carry it as that would invite attacks from hackers, but ended up carrying it anyways.) It was later released on Blu-Ray which you can find at pretty much any store now including Wal-Mart, which usually shies away from anything controversial.

Why am I posting this? Because I haven't heard of a SINGLE instance of any of the threats being carried out, not even some nut using that as an excuse. While Sony seems to have been scared shitless when this all first started, and likely the theatrical release was crippled as a result, it's now widely available on disc and digital through pretty much anybody and NOTHING has happened as a result. My thoughts on this are that most of the threats were more likely from pranksters than politically motivated, and I wouldn't rule out the whole thing being staged just to get more people interested in the movie- while I initially didn't care about it, I did end up seeing it. Even my PARENTS watched it, and they don't care at all for the type of humor in it. (I haven't been brave enough to ask their thoughts on it, as it was the sort of thing they would've yelled at me about for renting back in the 80s.)

In short, it was much ado about nothing.

Still have no desire to see it. Next question ...

It benefitted from insane publicity that it never would have gotten and was seen by countless people who wouldn't have seen it otherwise. Beyond that, the movie itself just wasn't anything special - although I will admit that the Tiger fight scene was one of the funnier things I've seen in a comedy in a long time.

I watched the first hour when it was on netflix. Got tired of it. It is definitely not a good movie. Had the hype/terror not been so high the film would be less than forgotten already.

As far as I recall, the FBI or whatever still attributed the Sony hack to North Koreans.

Movie was, it was fine but forgettable. It's Rogen and Franco, I think it would have done $50-70 million easily even without the extra hype around the threats and bans.

Yeah. It was fine. I'd buy the BD for cheap. Think it was $6.99 during BF. Eh. I'll get when I'm bored.

Liz Kaplan was my great discovery in terms of the film. Made me want to watch Masters of Sex and I was not disappointed.

I remember her from Mean Girls and Cloverfield. I wanted to see Masters of Sex... still haven't.

Obvious pleasure asides, she's gotten a lot of critical acclaim for her performance, apparently she's excellent on the show.

Shes come a long way from Mean Girls thats for sure. I remember her first film was shot at my high school way back in 2002 ironically it was about teenage abstinence and now shes been made famous for her role in Masters of Sex its a brilliant show!
