Re: Which recent space movie?
I enjoyed The Martian the most. It was entertaining throughout and I can see myself revisiting it. Interstellar was good too but a bit long and I feel like it's one of those films I have to be in the right mood to rewatch. I didn't care for Gravity at all.

Re: Which recent space movie?
A decently-budgeted remake of this would have them all beat:

It already exists.

Re: Which recent space movie?
Finally saw The Martian today. I enjoyed the hell out if it, but it's still no Gravity.
Gravity >>> The Martian >>>>>> Interstellar |
Re: Which recent space movie?
1. The Martian
2. Interstellar 3. Gravity (very good movie...just my least favorite of the 3) |
Re: Which recent space movie?
so, i'm making my way through Interstellar. liking it so far, just the runtime is daunting. will make it and then decide...

Thanks for the non update.

Re: Which recent space movie?
It's been awhile but I don't remember Gravity being "about" anything in an actual science fiction way.. It was just one long action scene.
I get that it literally is about Gravity; the weight, mass, and speed of objects, their trajectories and the like, and ultimately there are some visual ques that tie the whole thing together conceptually as being a metaphor of life and rebirth both physically and mentally. But that isn't science fiction is it? If that's science fiction then Malick's Tree of Life is science fiction. To paraphrase what another critic said about Interstellar, I like a film that isn't afraid to swing for the fences. Even if it fails or falters a little it's more enjoyable for me to see something that is filled with big ideas, big visuals, big emotions. That's what has always been great about cinema. I like that it tackled something very big like intergallactic flight in our lifetimes and filtered it down to something very small but powerful, love of family and love of the earth, something that Tarkovsky would have recognized and enjoyed. Because for all it's enormous bombast there is a bit of Solaris in Interstellar. |
Re: Which recent space movie?
This thread is ridiculous, but The Martian is my choice.

Except that it's less realistic than The Martian, at least according to scientists who wrote about the science behind Gravity and The Martian.

Gravity is great cinema. In a good theater, in 3-D, it was a hell of an experience. But that's about all it is. The script is weak, the characters are weak. Once you've seen it, there's not a lot to revisit. I enjoyed Interstellar, although in the end I think Nolan bit off more than he could chew. I don't feel a need to see it again. The Martian, I thought, had a compelling story, solid script and a great cast. It's by far the most rewatchable. |

I'd suggest you check out the videos/reviews yourself before just flying into the most outrageous elements. Even though The Martian deals with stuff that we haven't really done yet, it's not like it takes place in 2525. In the movie, people who worked on the Pathfinder in 1997 were still working at NASA. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KCxQ3hYHrZk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
