Is this one of those cases where a movie studio "owes" a star and makes their passion project despite knowing how terrible an idea it is?

I do want to see this, but I'm not sure if I'll see it in the theatre.

Will Smith has not watched a full game since making this movie.

Though he grew up a major Philadelphia Eagles fan and has participated in several Super Bowl festivities, Will Smith acknowledges that he has tried to avoid watching football since making Concussion, his new film about the tragic link between the violent sport and life-threatening brain injuries.
“I haven’t seen a whole game,” he told Yahoo Movies this week. “I walk through the airport and I’ll see something, or I’ll see a play on the news. It’s really stressful now. It definitely created a conflict for me. It’s still beautiful, it’s still America’s favorite game. That doesn’t change at all. It just has another side, that once you see and once you know and once you understand, you can’t not see.”

Am I the only one who's seen it so far?
I enjoyed it, even though it's a bit too melodramatic at times.
I'm interested to know how much is true to life and how much was embellished for the film. But it was good. Far from great. I felt that it did a good job of showing how each ex-player progressed in their illnesses differently. In this kind of film, I really wanted MORE of the science on display, but I didn't feel like we got it. I guess it's kind of hard to dumb down neuroscience, but the scene with

Ive had 2 concussions in the last year and I made it through them but I probably couldn't make it through this movie. Will Smith is overrated and this movie looks like a fluff piece I'd rather watch the front line documentary

I enjoyed this one, particularly Smith's performance. By the time I was 20-30 min in I didn't see Smith, I saw the character he was playing. I honestly can't remember another movie of his where that happened for me.
I never realized that so many players from the Steele Curtain team suffered and passed from this (assuming the movie was accurate in that part). I'd recommend it to anyone who's slightly interested in football and the impact it has.
I'll throw this in spoiler since this technically isn't a review thread:

It isn't too fluffy, but it is melodramatic in spots. And it's mostly about long term effects, not immediate.

Good to know I think Im just turned off by the Hollywood machine turning out so many "inspiration porn/true story" type movies these days. Will probably see it as a rental eventually.
