At what point is too new? We're only 15 years in this century. We can only go back so far. Even than. Some directors are limited by their output for various reasons.
I get him and Matt Reeves backwards all the time.

It's not that the directors have gone anywhere, it's the nature of moviegoing audiences. People used to line up for The Godfather the way they line up for The Avengers now. One of those two movies mentioned requires a great director to execute the vision, one requires a great special effects team. When and if (emphasis on "if") we get to another era where the main focus is no longer on CGI effects and comic book storylines, we'll see great directors again.

As did I. I dunno why. Isn't there a Whedon connection? Maybe an Abrams connection? I never heard of them till their debut films.

Both of them. Reeves and Goddard both worked with JJ Abrams on various projects (Reeves is the creator of Felicity. Goddard worked on Alias and Lost). They worked together (Reeves directed, Goddard wrote), with JJ Abrams (Produced) on Cloverfield.

Drew Goddard also wrote for Buffy and his first directing gig (Cabin in the Woods) was co-written by Joss Whedon.

I think I just piled on DD's high praise onto Goddard, thinking he had done more. Nope. Just that one pretty cool flick.
