While they are both extremely dangerous, at least the plane stunt is able to be vetted and controlled by professionals. How can it be controlled if he is flying solo? Makes no sense.

The amount of vetting for just a plane that doesn't even fly for insurance purposes is extreme. Much less a pilot. Much less an actor with minimal training.
But here's the thing. It's up to the safety team to say yes or no, BUT.... it's all up to the executives/studio head. It may not be insurable at all and most likely negated his life insurance policy. What the studio would need to do at that point is buy a completion bond. They already had to file a claim because of the shut down after he broke his foot. It's separate from the medical shit for Tom, but it's covering the cost of keeping everyone intact from office people up to the actors/directors over that course of time.

I don't doubt that Cruise did the flying. As someone mentioned i recall the tweet or whatever that said he had spent a year at least training for one stunt. I know insurance companies shit bricks at this kind of stuff, but if anyone can demand they do their own thing in films its Cruise. He still produces this series as well doesn't he, so guess the ball stops with him a lot of times.

Knowing what we do about Cruise and his passion for realism in his stunts throughout his career, I have no trouble believing that he flew the helicopter.

Is it me or does this look like a big step down from the last two? The trailer isn’t getting me excited one bit.

I'll probably still see it but I really think it looks subpar. It just seems like it’s missing something especially compared with the last two. Not quite sure what it is.

Like I said though I’m generally a fan of the franchise and think the last two in particular were great. This one I’m just not feeling.

I worked with Joe Kosinski this week (shitty name dropper, sorry) and he told me Tom pulls off a stunt in this film that hasn't been shown in any marketing and is his most impressive ever. So, that sounded pretty intriguing.

Eh, I’m jus glad these movies aren’t contingent on a “wow, he did that by himself!” kind of stuff. It’s been mostly solid stories and solid casting that’s brought me back every time.

I enjoyed Rogue Nation a lot and the airplane stunt was impressive but it was really overhyped for what we actually see on screen (same goes for Tom holding his breath under water for 6 minutes). The marketing really seems to push these stunts as selling points (and shitty tabloid shows like Entertainment Tonight and Extra just eat it up) when, in fact, they’re just really fun, well made action films.

Tom Cruise brought plenty of action to CinemaCon, where he touted his next mission.
Cruise pulled back the curtain on one of the death-defying sequences of Mission: Impossible — Fallout, his sixth outing as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. The sequence sees Cruise's hunt skydiving from such a height that he requires oxygen.
“It took a year to figure this sequence out," Cruise told the Las Vegas crowd Wednesday, before screening the footage.
The scene involves Cruise’s Hunt and CIA agent August Walker (Henry Cavill) as they skydive from a high altitude, jumping into a lightning storm above Paris. Mid-jump, they are struck by lightening and Hunt must catch Walker, who is now unconscious, and resuscitate him mid-air.
"I felt like I was in Top Gun," Cavill said of filming.
Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie noted, "We had to decide how much we could do that is physically possible without killing Tom."
To rehearse the sequence, the crew built what they say is the largest wind tunnel in the world. The team also built an oxygen helmet that was tested by the Royal Air Force.
"One of the requests that Tom made was that he not catch on fire," said McQuarrie.
To film the scene, the camera operator needed to wear the camera on top of his head, and jump out of the plane backwards. Cruise said he could reach speeds up to 200 miles per hour.
The hunt for the place to shoot the sequence proved to be a challenge, but the team settled on the United Arab Emirates.
"We wouldn't have been allowed to do this anywhere else," Cruise said. "They were very helpful."
Rebecca Ferguson, Angela Bassett and Alec Baldwin also star in Fallout, set to open July 27. The previous installment, 2015's Rogue Nation, earned $682 million worldwide, while the franchise that dates back to 1996 has collected more than $2.7 billion globally.
"It is a daily stress going to work with him, because you don't know is you are going to see him tomorrow," Pegg joked of Cruise, who is known for performing his own stunts.
Cruise said the team did 106 jumps to get three takes. Elements of each will be stitched together in post-production to look like one continuous take, and lightning will be added in post.
Cruise was also onhand at CinemaCon to receive the Pioneer of the Year award.
More to come.

Those stunts are starting to just get silly. This almosts seems more laughable than an edge of your seat stunt. CGI the shit out of stuff like that, I could care less. Any sillier and they start to lose credibility on the impact of these stunts.
Reminds me of the silliness of the stunt on Goldeneye where Bond climbs into the plane mid-air and pilots it from crashing.

If Tom Cruise has the balls to do that crazy shit, I'm all for it. I would think they would film all these insane stunts last just in case, so they'd still have a movie if the worst happens.

Cruise will be 56 years old in a couple months, so he is actually getting up there for a so-called action star.
