Weekend B.O. Thread - 7/10/2015 - 7/12/2015 - Minions!
1). Minions (UNI), 4,301 theaters / $46M+ Fri. / 3-day cume: $120M+ / Wk 1
2/3). Jurassic World (UNI), 3,441 theaters (-296) / $5.3M Fri. / 3-day cume: $18M+ / Total cume: $590M+ / Wk 5
Inside Out (DIS), 3,644 theaters (-514) / $5.3M Fri. / 3-day cume: $18M+ / Total cume: $284M+ / Wk 4
4). Terminator: Genisys (PAR), 3,783 theaters (+25) / $3.65M Fri. / 3-day cume: $12.8M to $13M (-52%) / Total cume: $67.8M to $68M / Wk 2
5). The Gallows (WB), 2,720 theaters / $4.5M Fri. / 3-day cume: $11M / Wk 1
6). Magic Mike XXL (WB), 3,376 theaters (+21) / $3.6M Fri. / 3-day cume: $9.8M – $10M (-22%) / Total cume: $48.7M / Wk 2
7). Self/Less (FOCUS), 2,353 theaters / $1.97M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.2M / Wk 1
8). Ted 2 (UNI), 2,171 theaters (-1,277) / $1.7M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.6M / Total cume: $71.55M /Wk 3
I like that Inside Out and Jurassic World are still flip flopping, Minions is killing it, expected drop for Genisys. Magic Mike XXL only fell 22% which is a ridiculously small amount and another dud for Ryan Reynolds.
This is Universal's 3rd $100m+ opening weekend this year and 5th to open above $60m (Pitch Perfect 2, Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious 7, Jurassic world) Their domestic haul so far this year (not counting Minions) is at $1.46b. Last year they had $580m, and their previous best year (2013) topped out at $833m. Safe to say they aren't so pissed about Blackhat and Seventh Son (domestic) bombing and Ted 2 underperforming.
It seems like where Legendary goes, so goes the money, the head honcho is a giant comic book fan (sadly, he's also responsible for Zack Snyder's career (He picked up 300 and the rights for Watchmen))

Random anecdote: I went to see Terminator: Genisys yesterday at 9:15 AM. First time ever in my life I was the only person in the movie theater watching a movie. With those numbers, I can see why.

Easy to see why Ryan Reynolds came back to his Deadpool role as all his other movies are bombing.
Reviews for Minions are mixed at best but I don't think kids care too much about that.

I doubt Terminator will reach $100mil at this point. They already pulled it out of the only full IMAX here in town two weeks early.

Granted, 9:15 AM is pretty early, even for Early Bird showings, but still, I can't remember being the only one ever in a theater either. Came close before.

Yeah, none of the theaters here screen anything earlier than 10, and even then they're usually sparsely attended, even on opening weekend.

This movie actually looks interesting, it just shouldn't have been released during the summer. It's not summer blockbuster material with little special effects. It would fare much better if it were released in the fall or winter with less competition from blockbuster movies.

I never even heard of Self/Less, much less saw a TV ad or trailer. No wonder it's doing terrible business (and as mentioned earlier, shouldn't have been released in the summer).

Eh, it's a good general gauge to how many critics liked something (I always read it as a % chance of you liking something), which was more or less the original comment (kids don't care as long as it isn't complete shit). I'm not a fan of the franchise in general.
In its reviews, it has been criticized a lot for how much it looks like a made-for-TV movie, which is as Un-Tarsem as it gets by far.

Metacritic has too limited a pool imho. I generally disagree pretty heavily with about 10 of their main websites which skews their scores pretty heavily.
though I guess they do sync up reasonably well these days (Minions has a 55% / 5.8 on rt, and a 56 on Metacritic. Genisys has a 27% / 4.7 on rotten tomatoes, 38 on Meta)

I just think rottentomatoes gives any Joe Shmoe too much of a voice, ones that don't really write good reviews. And they're very inconsistent with who is in the "cream of the crop" or whatever.
I actually like to see what others think of a movie here before any of those sites. You all should feel flattered.

Damn, Universal is having one phenomenal year. 50 Shades, Furious 7, Pitch Perfect 2, Jurassic Word, and now Minions. Even their mid-tier movies like Insidious 3, Unfriended, and The Boy Next Door made tidy profits on low budgets.

Took the kids to see Minions and they liked it. I thought it was atrocious. Not funny. Every thing the trailer was pretty much the entire film. I usually think the animated movies are funny. This was pure shit

Until this year, Universal was the only major studio without a movie that grossed over $100 million opening weekend. Not only do they have three, but they are breaking records doing it.
