Re: RIP Omar Sharif

By the time I graduated high school, I'd seen him in six films at neighborhood theaters.

He's great as a Mexican bandit opposite Gregory Peck in MACKENNA'S GOLD (1969). It's not a good movie, but it's wildly entertaining and has a once-in-a-lifetime cast (Catwoman! Lurch! Kojak! Tuco! The Penguin! Little Caesar! Abraham Lincoln! And Camilla Sparv!). If only it had been done as an Italian western, keeping Sharif, but with an edgier star (Robert Mitchum, maybe?), it would be a classic today...

He's also excellent opposite Peter O'Toole in NIGHT OF THE GENERALS (1967), where the two of them play German officers(!) in WWII, with Sharif investigating a series of prostitute murders committed by high-ranking general O'Toole, all while the allies are closing in on Berlin.

He's pretty funny as the title figure in CHE! (1969) opposite Jack Palance as Castro. Unforgettable! Ya gotta love Hollywood.

Love him in Lawrence of Arabia. He was also a world-class bridge player.

RIP Omar.

He did. But purely by the power of his bad assedness he carried on for three more years.

I actually thought he had passed-away already, too!

Rest in peace. Another one of the greats has moved on.

He was cool in 13th Warrior - granted, it was a small part, but cool nonetheless.
