Big Trouble in Little China Sequel S: The Rock
Oh hell no....
Dwayne Johnson to Star in ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Remake
June 1, 2015 | 03:18PM PT
Justin Kroll
Following the box office success of “San Andreas,” star Dwayne Johnson is in negotiations to star in a remake of ’80s cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” for 20th Century Fox, sources tell Variety.
Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are penning the script with Johnson and his producing partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia on board to produce through their 7 Bucks Entertainment banner.
The original starred Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in Chinatown between warring clans. The pic was directed by “Halloween” helmer John Carpenter and, while not a huge commercial success, would go on to amass a cult following over the years.
Besides “San Andreas,” which brought in more than $100 million at the global box office in its opening weekend, Johnson also returned to form as Agent Hobbs in “Furious 7,” which became the first film to cross the billion-dollar milestone at the worldwide box office this year.
He also has his new TV show “Ballers” bowing on June 21 on HBO and is currently filming “Central Intelligence” for New Line. He is repped by WME.
The news was first reported by The Wrap.

This sounds like a bad idea cuz there's a thing to the tone that doesn't fit today. The size of the overall tone will be changed. Admittingly... The Rock could make the remake pretty enjoyable. He is a lot of fun.

I'd be fine if he will not be Jack Burton and will play some other character stepping into another BTiLC universe.

It definitely won't be a comedy. If it's an action film then fine but otherwise it won't work, granted, I haven't seen The Rock's John Wayne impersonation yet, so....

I don't see why not. Wouldn't it be akin to what they did with Carpenter's The Thing? Why not use the mysticism of any Chinatown anywhere where this kinda shit can happen yet no one would talk about it?
But for Rock to be Jack Burton? Ugh.

the tone will be different, but not as horribly as Point Break looks to be.
the part that makes me think this might be ok is that he is producing it. obviously he likes the original and "gets it"

Johnson could handle the comedic bits from the original pretty well, although I agree this is a tough one to try and remake given the tone, as Snake said. Cautiously optimistic given The Rock's involvement.

It'd be bold of them to have Fillion lead a big movie.
I'm optimistic on this one. The Rock is pretty enjoyable. He may be doing a lot (good for him) but he's enjoyable in his roles from what I've seen Fast Five onward. He's got a lot of charisma and something like that could sell this movie well while being respectful of it.
The tone is the issue for me. Something like that worked well in the past. It pushed it to that level. Today? That tone may fall extremely flat. I can see him keeping the cheeky tone to it but I don't think it could go all out w/ it like Carpenter's did. So.... I await the trailer for it cuz there are a lot of factors to where this could work as a different interpretation of the source in a way.

I don't think I could buy Reynolds in a role like that, or even Fillion for the most part. But who knows. They both mug it up too much.
Though I generally don't have an issue with Reynolds, I liked him in Buried and The Voices. I wasn't a fan of Fillion on Firefly/Serenity but haven't seen much else of his outside of Slither.
The only added thing that gives me faith this may work is the fact Fury Road had a $150m budget and just came out. The Rock fits because you need someone that can play tough guy and goofy.

What do you mean? Cuz they're properties more known for the 1980s and Fury Road was awesome?
What helped Fury Road was George Miller. That man knows how to make a movie.

The Rock, as much as I like him, is all wrong for this. Jack Burton, despite not realizing it himself, is the goofy sidekick to Wang Chi. That's the whole joke. Would any studio allow the Rock to not be a badass in an action movie (or action-comedy in this case)?

The tone, the filming style, the ridiculousness, everything. It's part of what made it fantastic for me.

You know what, whatever. Go ahead. Make this movie. Carpenter remakes generally suck balls anyway; might as well try to make one halfway enjoyable by putting in a solid lead actor.
Still, it will never work like the original. Lightning in a bottle.

I actually think The Rock fits this pretty well and he has the comedic chops to pull off the bumbling sidekick role. But realistically speaking this will probably be a straght forward action remake.

That's my issue. It's not that he can't do it. It's that a studio won't let him do it.
