Good question.

I find that my "most rewatchable" movies have a rhythm to the overall editing/sound design/dialogue.

Seriously. 9 times out of 10 I would come back to our dorm room and he would be watching one of those movies.
Dan03oly was your roommate??

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

So I asked my sister, why do you like listening to a song over again?
She came back with "Usually because I enjoy it so much and brings back nice memories. But they are only 2 min. and I don't buy them. Also I'm multitasking at the same time like reading, walking, driving and accomplishing and being productive.☺️"

Good logic but she does buy the songs on iTunes.

You should have told her that hearing (background music) and listening (actually focusing on the music) are 2 different things. BTW I'm a musician.

Why do I see movies over and over again? Because I enjoy them?

For instance, just last night I watched Sneakers for probably the fourth or fifth time.

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

I don't watch movies over and over because there are too many others to watch and not enough time. I think there are very, very few - if any - films I have seen more than ten times.

Each member here will have their own reasons, but for me personally, I do it to piss off OldBoy's sister.

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

It's weird how I can watch movies/listen to songs I love over and over again, but books that I love I've rarely read more than once, and I love to read...I just never really have a desire to reread one no matter how much I liked it.

These are just a few of the gifts (or reasons, to be more mundane) that keep me coming back to the film.
One of the great things about kung fu and wu xia movies is the fact that they do the same things over and over in each film but do it a slightly different way each time, e.g. catching the thrown darts. (Or sometimes the same way--I liked it once, I'll like it a thousand times.) So, instead of seeing the same kung fu film over and over again, I've seen hundreds of different ones and experienced the same pleasure in new ways each time. By the time I'd seen CROUCHING TIGER, I had seen these elements in dozens of films so I was less impressed than you. But I did go see it again to try and find out what I was missing from it and I realized that in terms of the characters and their relationships, it brought some fresh layering that distinguished the film from its predecessors. The acting, particularly from Chow and Michelle, was more naturalistic than usual for a film of this genre.

Trolling isn't a strong enough word here. In fact, your obsession with bashing these movies speaks of much deeper issues you have.

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

Cause that's just what people like to do. Something entertained you, you loved it and felt like experiencing it again and again.

I do this more with music, if I like a song, I will listen to it over and over an over again.

Wow, your sister is a real douche. And if she has a hobby that lasts more than 2 mins is also hypocritical.

When I first listen to a newly acquired album by a group or singer that I like I find myself reluctant to listen to it if I have to do something else at the same time. It's like a slap in the face to the singer/group/musicians to divide your attention like that.

Ask her why she eats a favorite food again and again or goes to the same restaurant over and over.

She doesn't do those things because they're not productive.

You need food to survive though. You don't technically need movies .

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

I don't know Oldboy's sister, but I know the type. They're of the opinion that once you know what happens in a movie, you don't need to see it again. Luke blows up the Death Star, Andy Dufresne escapes from prison, Rosebud is the sled. What more do you need from a movie?

Of course, there's a LOT more you can get from a movie, and only on subsequent viewings. Like in The Abyss where Brigman tosses aside a toolbox and a Crescent wrench falls out, and in the next scene a Crescent wrench is all they need to stop the flooding. Or the early seemingly innocent scenes in The Wicker Man which become very insidious once you know what's really happening.

The irony with these people is that they think the only thing that matters in a movie is the way the story ends (oh, and these were the people who disliked letterboxed movies in the 4x3 days, as you can still get the gist of the story in full frame), yet they'll watch countless romantic comedies, action films, or superhero movies even though they're all basically the same stories over and over again.

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

Sometimes I will watch a film to focus on the cinematography, the editing, the acting or some other aspect besides the story.
Just like I'll listen to a song and focus on one of the instruments or the vocals.

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

For me it's a mood/frame of mind thing. Like Christmas. When you feel like Christmas you want to watch Christmas movies and listen to Christmas music. I just happen to experience a wider range of moods/frames of mind. When I'm in one of these moods I watch movies that fit that mood. I collect own movies that fit these moods so I can watch them to my hearts content.
I can slip into a 1970s drive-in mood that is every bit as strong as the Christmas mood most everybody experiences.

Re: Why do you see movies over and over again?

Familiarity vs novelty. Each person values those differently, and for each person one may rise to prominence on a particular day for myriad subconscious reasons. Sometimes you're just in the mood for something in particular and nothing new promises that. Sometimes you need the comfort of the familiar without worrying about unpredictable tension. Sometimes I have several new things to watch but my brain predicts more momentary enjoyment out of something I already watched.
