That's exactly why I love Superman: Peace on Earth. He tries to end world hunger, but ultimately fails. I believe 100% that you can have black and white heroes and villains, while also having that depth. The trouble is the audience, as you said. Captain America can't directly criticize US foreign policy, so it's an allegory. Except wait, actually the US only did those things because a Nazi Cult (except you can't say "Nazi") infiltrated the government. All regular Americans are good guys. And I LIKE The Winter Solider.
It would be nice to have the heroes lose. Like actually, no takesies-backsies lose. And you know what? They can keep pressing on. They're heroes.

I know it's uncool to sympathize with Joss Whedon in 2022, but Age of Ultron always felt to me like a potentially great movie that was submarined by studio interference. You can almost see the tension onscreen between what Whedon was trying to do and all of the studio mandated "Marvel business". The movie ultimately doesn't work, but listen to the commentary. Whedon sounds like someone who put his heart and soul into the film and was completely broken by the process. It's no surprise Marvel took the keys away and handed then to the Russos. They were far better equipped to deliver what Feige and the franchise needed.
Feige does run a tight ship and I think people like that about the MCU, but I can see how unending continuity would hamstring creators and why so many of them get attached to projects but leave before finishing (or sometimes even starting) them.

I always thought AoU gets unfairly crapped on. It's not perfect, but definitely in my top half of MCU films.

It's refreshing to see some of you actually liked Age of Ultron, the amount of hate this movie got here made me almost ashamed to own it and like it. We were definitely entertained by it, not sorry I bought it...

I should probably watch the commentary but what was Whedon's original vision supposed to be like? I assume they gave him story beats because this had to tie into the Sokovia accords and the birth of Nemo.

But I think in general, Whedon was more interested in characterization and perhaps had to compromise some of that stuff for the action. Which, by the way, is totally understandable on the part of Marvel. I seen to recall the farmhouse scenes being a real point of contention between director and studio.
I should really revisit.
