Yeah, it's amazing to directly compare Al Pacino's superb performances in the 1970s to his mostly over-the-top, scene-chewing performances from later in his career. When was the "shark jump" in his acting anyway? Scarface in the '80s? Or sooner?

There's no other reason why Russell Crowe was nominated and won for Gladiator.

All of these films were after Scarface and he was good in all of them. Some of the acting was even restrained.

All the stuff mentioned is exactly why I do not watch the Oscars (or any award shows for that matter) and pay no attention to them. It pains me that I have friends who have to go see every movie and performance nominated just so they can talk about the Academy Awards the next day. They make excuses for shit movies and performances all the time just because "it got nominated."

Agreed. He just set the bar so high in the '70s, and the films were so iconic, that I don't even think comparisons to his later work are fair.

Jack Nicholson was doing nothing more than just playing himself under some good makeup, while throwing in a "hoo-hoo", a "ha-ha", and a "he-he" every once and a while. Sorry, but he actually sucked as the Joker. Jack Nicholson's extremely overrated performance in Batman is one of the reasons why a thread like this even exists!

(BTW, if you truly think it was a "good" performance, just go back and watch the performance closely to see if it's anything more than what I said above)
