They showed the main character in class. Seemed like a college class to me. Plus she gets up in the middle of class to leave and the teacher doesn't say anything. A high school teacher would absolutely intervene.

Horror isn't usually my jam, but I love this movie. I think it's pretty close to a perfect horror flick for me. Just the ramping up of constant dread was so well done and doesn't rely on jump scares is just amazing. I just showed my girls last week and they are both fans now.

Probably the best horror movie of the 21st Century.

I don’t agree with “best of the 21st century,” but there is plenty here to like. The technical filmmaking is superb, the writing is creative (but, as I said, has seams showing), and the ideas are interesting. Certainly better than most dreck that comes out as horror.

The teacher does say something. What is a teacher supposed to
do when somebody walks out? (I notify security, that’s all.)

The class could have been either (it isn’t very prominent and I don’t recall what the material was), but the building felt more like an old high school than a college campus to me. Totally open to interpretation, though.

I appreciated this movie more than I liked it. Poked through this thread and will say my biggest issue was banged around, but not laid out. This was yet another example of a film being written in the mindset of how a 12-year old sees the world.

I am probably nitpicking, but I couldn't understand who the characters were due to the writing.

Were they siblings, were they friends? Why are they always at the house, even when the lead is not? Why are they all sleeping in the same bed? Why are they all playing Go Fish on the front porch?

Were they 21 or 12? It really felt as if this was originally written with the intent of the characters being 12 to 15 years old, but then the filmmaker got cold feet about pushing a sex-based movie with pre-teens in the lead. The writer then does a few quick rewrites on lines of dialogue, and the problem is "fixed" . . . except everything else about the characters remained and the problem is highlighted even more.

While it was cool that the movie was timeless, it didn't help that the actors were also. They felt like 25-30 year old actors playing 13 year olds who thought they were 19 year olds.

EDIT: Sure enough. The cast ranges from 28 to 36 now, so a 16 year old and a bunch of 20-somethings.

I can't answer all of your questions but I do know the director stated he purposefully made the movie to feel like you're in "dream state" - also, he wanted it to feel timeless as well - the clamshell text device looking thing was custom made for the movie - and while it looks like it's a phone (and obviously in the real world it probably is) it's not. Notice how there are no cell phones throughout the movie as well. The actors are all purposefully playing it "calm" or monotonous as well.

I also see this isn't thread that states how I've turned around on this film. I didn't like it at all upon a first viewing but it never left my head. Watched it a second time and then loved it. Yes, I am bothered they don't go into the details more of what is actually going on, but the movie itself just creeps under your skin and stays there. Nobody is safe at any time, and the ending leaves it up to you decide if the person walking behind them is "following" then or not.

Arguably. Top 3-5 comfortably.

On a side note, the thread bump got me excited for a moment. May have to give this one a re-watch since it's been a couple years.

They've had a script for the sequel since at least the Covid era, but it must not be that good since all progress seems to have stalled.

There's a Thread for the sequel. I know that Monroe talked a little about it while doing press for The Hand that Rocks the Cradle.

I've heard a lot about this and I think I'll finally check it out with a digital rental on Thursday while our youngest is out with friends. That said, I know the premise involves sex as a key plot point, can someone spoilerize how explicit the sex scenes are, in terms of watching this with my oldest, please?

Not explicit at all. Like 90210/CW level.

Spoiler:
The sex itself isn't really explicit at all. I mean sex is the central theme of the movie and the "curse" or whatever you call it is passed on through sex, but the film doesn't really focus on sex scenes. There's a very tame one at the beginning, with no nudity, and if I'm remembering correctly, everything else is more implied than shown as the characters try to pass on the curse. There is some nudity depicted though the creature itself, which appears as different people "following" the people who have the curse. It at one point appears as old man appears on a roof, fully naked. This is the only male nudity in the film. At another point it appears as one character's mother, with her breast hanging out, and it leaps forward and mounts him in a sexual manner (he is fully clothed). It also appears as 1 or 2 other women with breasts exposed. All nudity is depicted as creepy and not sexual.

Thanks, everyone, that's helpful. Looking forward to finally watching this one. Trying not to build it up too much for me or my family. Low expectations can make for big entertainment value.

Yeah, sex is central to plot of the movie... the supernatural element is STD metaphor... but it's presented in a matter-of-fact way and not particularly titillating. There is some nudity from the "creature," but it's also presented in a non-titillating way and meant to be scary and discombobulating. The general tone of the film is rather clinical. And the way it treats teenage sex also verges on being somewhat Reefer Madness.

Re: It Follows (2014, D: David Robert Mitchell) S: Maika Monroe

There's two other sex scenes later in the movie but as pointed out, very PG-13 tame. Everything is under the sheets and it's done in service of the plot and not remotely titillating at all. The one at the beginning is probably the closest to a teen horror sex scene, so if you can make it past that, the other two scenes are nothing.

Sorry, everyone, this was a bust for us. Oldest got bored after 20 minites and left. My wife and I kept finding plot holes so the many wonderful parts lost cohesion for the sum. One example: her friends just go off with her for days? Don't have to call in sick to work or class just go road trippin', okay. A generous 3.5/5.

not sure how thats a plot hole."mom, Im going over to Jane's for the weekend." "Okay honey, have fun."

Does the movie really need a scene explaining how sleepovers work?
