Would you ever go to a theater again?

I still go occasionally, but mostly just to cheaper midday showings or occasionally to big blockbusters as a communal thing. I was willing to jockey a ways out to my proper IMAX back when they were still making 15/70 prints, but now I mostly just wait for Blus. If there's a special 35mm or 70mm screening or something, I'd obviously make an exception, but that's not something that'll be happening much going forward. Largely, and it's probably just me, the magic is gone from communal film-going, especially at multiplexes. I still go from time-to-time, but I think I'm just part of the home video generation. So it goes, I suppose.

Having visited Austin for the first time a few months ago and experiencing the Alamo Theaters I can honestly say I would go every week if we had one here. The theater experience has gotten so unpleasant lately I find myself thinking about the assholes around me more than the movie I'm watching.

I rarely go as it is. So I'd likely ditch the movie theater entirely if I could enjoy the movie day-and-date at home in HD and with multi-channel sound. Heck, the only reason I went to see TBotFA in theaters was to hear my first Atmos mix. Otherwise, I would have waited to catch it on BD.

I don't pay three dollars to rent a streaming movie, I sure wouldn't pay 11.00.
I have only had a few bad movie theatre experiences, not enough or bad enough to scare me away forever.
Plus, I find it tough to watch a movie at home, there's always stuff I "should" be doing, but going to a movie is still a bit of an event. And there's something about the big screen, darkened theater experience.
I do very much like my 'home theater' and use it much more than I see movies in an actual theater, but it's not a full replacement.

I only go to the theater anymore when its an event movie. Probably the only time I will see a movie this year will be Star Wars Episode 7 in December with all of my friends who I grew up with that loved the original movies.
There are too many good TV shows that I watch or older shows I binge watch these days instead of wasting my time at the movies.

It just depends on the movie. Would I watch The Avengers at home? No.
But if all of this years nominees were available On Demand (if they're still in theatres), I would absolutely be using that as an option. I want to see Selma, but I don't really feel like going out to see it. Not even just about convenience, it's also about reaching the highest possible audience, especially with smaller films.

We are likely to see 7 movies this year in the theater.
Avengers/Ant-Man/Star Wars for the adults (Maybe the little dude as well)
Inside/Out, Peanuts, Minions, Good Dinosaur (With the little dude).

Re: Would you ever go to a theater again?
so i was seriously thinking how laborious it has become for the whole theater experience. coordinating times, people, snacks, etc...
maybe it is my advancing age or something that just doesn't hold the same magic as it once did...
but, if movies, all movies, upon release were able to be streamed via a streaming media device or even through the cable companies for the exact same price as a going theater ticket in your area, would you give up the theater experience entirely to watch at home?

I much rather see a film in a dark theater because you have no interruptions and can get completely lost in the flick. Plus comedies are lot more fun in a large group of people than home alone.
2015 looks to be an incredible year of movies so I'll be going a lot. Already at least 4 films I want to see in January alone.

Entirely? No. There are still the occasional blockbusters I want to see in 3D, but even those are only about twice a year. If I had a Drafthouse closer than 40 minutes away, I would probably go there more often.

Re: Would you ever go to a theater again?
i'm still torn. i've had great experiences recently (Boyhood, TWoWS), but for the most part hate the hustle and bustle. if any movies in the theater now (Selma, TBotFA, Am. Sniper, etc...) were available to me in my home the same day i would opt for having people over and watch it in the living room.
but for the most part y'all are right. the event movies (Star Wars) are strictly big theater only!

I love seeing a movie on the big screen with big sound. I only go the first screening on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Typically the theater is nearly empty - and that works for me.
Going in the evening? On a weekend night?
Never.

For the new Star Wars and Star Trek movies. Most others can wait.

I'd stay at home and invest in the best home theater I could afford. I already go to far less movies than I used to (about 10 a year compared to over 50 a year when I was younger) because the theater experience has become so annoying.

Still love going to the movies although mostly for the big event type movies. It usually isn't much to coordinate. Its either me, kids, wife or some combination thereof. Everyone is invited at this time, you either go or not go. In fact when I retire, I hope the theater is still there for me to work there PT.

Re: Would you ever go to a theater again?
A proper home theater that can rival a movie theater isn't possible in my apt, so I still try to make it to the movies.
But, more often than not, I find I am waiting more and more for things to hit BD or Netflix Streaming. It's not so much about the many annoyances I may encounter in theaters, but just about why I go. If my g/f and I both really want to see something, then we make it a point to see it when it comes out (e.g. Gone Girl). But, other than that, I tend to just go socially and there's never a shortage of movies I want to see (whether new releases or in rep theaters). Hell, some times I'll go and see a film I don't care about (Taken 3), just b/c it'll be fun to make fun of it and stuff with my friends after.
I used to be better about this though and make a point to see at least the films from my favorite directors in theaters. I'm still hardcore about some (Scorsese, Tarantino, and PTA), but I even missed Wes Anderson's latest in theaters (just ordered it on BD from Amazon for less than the price of a movie ticket, so I'll be seeing it this week).

Re: Would you ever go to a theater again?
i'll tell you the more and more i watch movies at home and at work, especially recently on my phone even, the less i feel like going to a theater.
i saw American Sniper in the theater last week and it was good to great movie, but the snacks i bought were $15.25 and it was mildly snowing out. i thought after i could have watched this at home and still get the same enjoyment out of it.
i dunno. i mean you all are right with certain movies being "theater" only experiences, especially the new Star Wars and i would definitely only see the new Avatar's in the theater and in 3D, but on a whole i am starting to sour...

Re: Would you ever go to a theater again?
I haven't been to the theater more than 2 or 3 times a year since I built a decent home theater. My 125.5" screen with 3D projection and 7.1 surround sound is frankly a better experience -- given that I sit about 11' away and it fills my field of vision, and I can completely control the environment. The only times I go to the theater is for Rifftrax live events, and the occasional spectacle movie. I think the last non-Rifftrax movies I went out to see were Star Trek Into Darkness, Gravity, and Interstellar.

Re: Would you ever go to a theater again?
^ Ha, no, not at all. When I first set up my projector, I used that standard definition for distance. The image was way too small for me, and not at all why I bought a projector in the first place. Those measurements are way too conservative, IMO. They're for old people or something.
Image size, to me, is like buying a boat. When you get x, you want x+1. When you get x+1, you want x+2. Etc. My image now goes from ceiling height (8 foot) to about 2 feet off the floor (just high enough so that my feet don't block it when reclined), and is about 9 feet wide. Seems perfect to me.
