The Lego Batman Movie (2017, D: Chris McKay) S: Arnett, Cera (voice)

The Lego incarnation of Batman proved to be so popular in the Warner Bros. hit The Lego Movie that he is getting his own big-screen spinoff.

Not only that, the movie is being fast-tracked.

Chris McKay, the animation supervisor on Lego Movie, was initially set to direct that project's sequel. However, the movie is being pushed back and McKay is now helming the Lego Batman movie, which is being written by author-screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith.

Warners is eyeing a 2017 release for the spinoff, possibly even the original date for Lego Movie 2. The next Lego movie is Ninjago, which is due to open Sept. 23, 2016. The Lego Movie sequel would presumably come after 2017.

Will Arnett will reprise the voice of the Caped Crusader. Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the custodians of the Lego screen brand, are producing.

Batman was one of the highlights of the movie, stealing every scene that he was in. With Arnett taking Christian Bale’s gravely voice to an extreme degree, the character was arrogant, dark, sarcastic, and just too-cool-for-this-adventure.

Lego Batman is already a very popular franchise. There have been at least three video games as well as a straight-to-home movie, Lego Batman: The Movie, DC Super Heroes Unite, where Troy Baker provided the voice for the Dark Knight.

Warners had no comment.

The kid loves Ninjago, he would be all over it.

Loved Arnett in The Lego Movie as Batman, and I'd totally be down for a full film with him in the role.

As much as I want another Lego Movie, I don't know where they're going to go story-wise -- and Lord & Miller already won't be directing.

Hopefully it's better than The Lego Movie, which was very lame.

I honestly don't get the appeal of all this Lego stuff. Sure it was fun when I was 10, but I'm definitely not 10 anymore.

I don't play with Legos anymore but the film was awesome.

Not sure about a whole flick with Lego Movie Bats but... I'll get interested if I get interested.

It was a good movie, you don't have to be a kid to enjoy it. Sort of like the Toy Story movies.

While I loved Batman in the Lego movie, i'm actually a bit wary of an entire movie about him. Having an hour and a half of a douchy Batman might be a bit overkill for me :p

To each their own, I suppose, but I thought it was one of the better movies I've seen this year.

There's definitely no age restrictions with Lego. Not sure what being 10 has to do with any of it.

Yeah. Lego Movie had all the makings to fail just based as a concept. But Lord and Miller fucking made gold with that. I was amazed that it fucking held together the way it did as I saw it. I remember seeing it and being wildly bombarded by the images flying at me. It shouldn't work.... but it does. And very well.

The news of the casting of "Scott Pilgrim" star Michael Cera as Robin the Boy Wonder would probably get fanboys up in arms. Well it has just happened, but it's in a context that makes sense and probably won't draw any anger.

Cera will lend his voice to the character in the upcoming "Batman"-themed spin-off of "The LEGO Movie" at Warner Bros. Pictures. Cera will reunite with his "Arrested Development" co-star Will Arnett who returns as the voice of the Dark Knight and return as Batman's partner-in-crimefighting.

Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing while Chris McKay is directing from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith.

Cera has also acquired the film rights to Charles Portis' novel "Masters of Atlantis" with plans to act in and potentially direct the project about a young man who becomes entangled in a quasi-religious cult which focuses on the lost city of Atlantis.

On one hand, Michael Cera sucks. On the other, Cera playing a whiney little bitch Robin would be perfect given the Batman we saw in the Lego Movie.

I was going to say that you'll love the Lego Batman 2 videogame, but then I read that they basically redid the plot in that for the movie.

The direct-to-video LEGO DC movies have been great so far, very funny stuff for kids and adults. They also look great on Blu-ray.

LEGO Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! is a hilarious riff on the Super Friends.
