Because Jackson has bit parts in a ton of films. I assumed his roles in the Marvel films helped boast the total. Add that to the Star Wars prequels and you've already got a hefty total (Jurassic Park didn't do to bad at the box office either).

The record is for highest grossing ACTOR, but you're quoting highest grossing movies. When you factor in Samuel L. Jackson's TV and stage work, he has more than enough to make up the difference between his movie work and Tom Hanks' work.

Samuel L. Jackson made a lot from The Cosby Show, LOST and 24. His broadway work (The Book of Mormon) cannot be discounted either.

I watched all three of those shows, and I don't remember him being on them. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing Sam Jackson in a TV show (other than a cameo as Nick Fury in Agents of SHIELD). My memory is bad, but I didn't think it was that bad.
