So they followed the same path as 21 Jump Street.

I literally don't watch anything with Dax Shepard in it, not even Kristen Bell. I've always found his discount Zach Braff act and dollar store Owen Wilson looks grating.

No reviews yet and opens tonight/tomorrow. I'm sure it's shit. It doesn't look anything like how they originally described it would be.

Re: CHiPS: The Movie (W/D: Dax Shepard) S: Shepard, Peña, D’Onofrio

Yep, from the first page this is how it was described:

We last head about Dax Shepard’s adaptation of CHiPs last September when he commented on the film by saying that it would be more serious than the original TV series, which ran from 1977-1983. However, we didn’t know when California Highway Patrol motorcycle cops Don Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Michael Pena) would be hitting the road.

Steve recently spoke to Michael Peña for Ant-Man, and their conversation touched on CHiPs and the project’s status.

Pena said that the project was greenlit two or three weeks ago, which means he’s been preparing for the role:

I had to start learning how to ride a motorcycle, rehearsing, and then working out. I’ve been throwing up like every day after workouts. I like food, you know? And I also like reading, being on my iPad, no walks in the park; just chilling with my son. We just lounge and this [gestures to stomach] gets bigger.

Pena also revealed that the movie would be set in the present day, and reiterated Shepard’s earlier statement that the film would be in the vein of Lethal Weapon. Specifically, don’t expect a comedy that’s barraging you with jokes:

It’s more like a Lethal Weapon where there’s a lot of action and what we wanted to do is if there’s any comedy that we do, it’s not like one-liners here and there, like we’re the guys always being stand-up comedians. It’s almost like you lose a little bit of the plotline whenever you’re off doing your own comedy thing, so we’re focusing a little more on the plot, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Following up on his comment about how the movie will be “Lethal Weapon-ish”, he added that they’re going for an R-rating, which should be interesting. At the very least, it looks like they’re definitely avoiding the Starsky & Hutch approach.

Finally, Pena also noted that the film will co-star Vincent D’Onofrio and that they’re trying to get Kristen Bell (who’s married to Shepard) for a role, so it looks like they’re putting together a strong cast this adaptation. I have no feelings one way or the other about the CHiPs TV series, but I like these actors, and it sounds like they have a solid take on the material, so I’m excited to see what they do with it.

Re: CHiPS: The Movie (W/D: Dax Shepard) S: Shepard, Peña, D’Onofrio

We critics often get asked how we can sit through so many bad movies. The answer — apart from the fact that it isn’t exactly hard labor — is that even a lot of middling Hollywood product has moments of baseline entertainment value. The average Adam Sandler comedy is funnier than the worst Adam Sandler comedy; most mediocre superhero movies are better than “Suicide Squad.” And when it comes to the brain-dead action comedy that “ironically” reboots a piece-of-crap television series from the ’70s or ’80s, “Starsky & Hutch” and “The Dukes of Hazzard” were flat-out masterpieces compared to “CHIPS,” an ultra-violent and ultra flavorless buddy movie that’s so dedicated to hitting the generic sweet spot of “what the audience wants” that it actually had to go and capitalize the “i” in the title, as if that quirky lower-case digit from the TV show was just too threateningly odd.

I also love this quote

Shepard’s vision for the franchise is barely coherent and written in Crayon.

36% on RT currently: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chips_2017

I'm sure it'll go lower.

Less than two hours later and it's down to 29%.

I say it'll stop around 19%.

It amazes that there are Studio Execs who still greenlight these types of movies especially with a guy like Dax Sheppard writing and directing it. Did they really think this would be anything but awful?

Not really.

That movie was self-referential satire. This is just low hanging fruit raunchy humor.

I've seen some rotten reviews waiting to be posted, but somehow it's managed to get back up to 36%.

I'm sure they just did this to stay in the Kristen Bell business. And with that pic they just posted who can blame them. How did he land her again?

I don't want to be over the top or anything but just judging by the red band trailer alone; this is the worst thing that's ever existed anywhere.

I forgot where I read it as I don't see a link above, but apparently she timed her breastfeeding so that she was fullest while filming. Dedication right there.

I was puzzled by his career before when I thought he was just a lousy actor. You mean to tell me a studio financed a major motion picture and let Dax Shepard write and direct it?! Good lord.

I still think this one looks funny, but I don't watch comedies at the theater, so I will wait for the BD.

Me neither. I'm weird like that, I think. This one doesn't look good, but I'll Netflix out of curiosity. $7.6 must be a big disappointment...

I doubt the studio is disappointed. Something tells me they wrote this one off a while ago.

Some comedies are better in a theater as a group experience. I remember seeing "This is the End" and the audience was going nuts. Saw it again at home and it wasn't quite as funny.

The only good thing Dax has been in is Kristen Bell.
