Stuff Your Mom Likes!

so it may sound juvenile or whatever, but once a month me and mom like to get together and watch a movie. just us, just one movie.

now, thing of it is, i am starting to run out of stuff for us to enjoy. most of the stuff i have seen and is smaller, sometimes independent, most she has not. actually, she only wants to see movies if she has never seen them and since she is not a big movie person on her own (meaning she won't just sit down and watch a movie with no newspaper in front of her), so this is the only opportunity she gets to see these sometimes great little movies, sometimes big animated as well...

so what we have seen and thoroughly enjoyed:

Short Term 12
Robot & Frank
Frozen
The Lion King
Toy Story 3
Philomena
Kissing Jessica Stein
American Hustle
Silver Linings Playbook
Dallas Buyers Club
All is Lost
Vicky Christina Barcelona
Blue Jasmine
In A World...
The Hunt
Amelie
Drinking Buddies

among a few others...

Stuff She Didn't Like...
Admission
Neighbors

so just asking, what does YOUR mom like?

Anything Christian.
Anything on broadcast TV.
Almost anything Polish, though I showed her Knife in the Water and she was not impressed...

She kind of drives me crazy...

Well I bought my mom One of the Money with Katherine Heigl last weekend and she's already watched it like 5 times. She reads the books it's based on.

On the TV side her favorites are Survivor, The Amazing Race, Justified, The Bridge, Parks and Rec, and Brooklyn Nine Nine.

She also watches Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead but I don't think she'd consider either of them favorites.

Re: Stuff Your Mom Likes!

My mother mostly likes crime shows/movies, especially about serial killers, but I don't think she would like something as graphic as "Dexter." For some reason, she's also fascinated by gay/lesbian stuff (even though she's against gay marriage). She loves "Monk," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Columbo." The current shows she likes are news magazines such as "Dateline" and "48 Hours" and a couple of game shows, including "Family Feud."

Yes, she loves horror/scifi/fantasy stuff. I bought her the special edition of Pumpkinhead DVD a few years ago for her birthday and she loved it.

Re: Stuff Your Mom Likes!

My mother's taste is completely random and unpredictable. Whenever she asks me, "Would I like it?" I have to throw my hands up and say, "How would I know." I remember taking her to see Life Is Beautiful and she was furious at me, like facist Italy was somehow my fault.

Movies she watches over and over:
The Shining
My Cousin Vinny
Get Shorty
Fish Called Wanda
The Piano
Jaws
The Dream Team
Wolf
Manhattan Murder Mystery

Re: Stuff Your Mom Likes!

My mother is the reason I got into film - she is a huge fan of clasic film (her era) and the love translated to me. Once, in my early 20's Ken Russel's Crimes of Passion turned up on cable. It was a movie I'd already seen, so I was a bit nervous about viewing it with her, given the content of the film. But to her, it had Anthony Perkins and current beauty Kathleen Turner; it couldnt be all that bad, right? So, we watched it together and she thoroughly enjoyed the film. Sometimes you forget that your parents are adults and were young just like you.

I watched Closer with my mother because she likes Julia Roberts. Might have been a bit of a mistake..

My mother liked old horror movies. She made me watch Night of the Living Dead when I was 7 or 8.

The first one that comes to mind is It's A Wonderful Life. She could watch that one over and over again, she loves Jimmy Stewart.

Re: Stuff Your Mom Likes!

A few years ago, my mother said that she wanted to see all of the films on the AFI's "100 Years, 100 Movies" list, so every week or two I take one of the films from the list over to her house and we watch it. So far, we've watched 64 out of 100 films (and we're using the 2007 10th Anniversary list).

Here are some of her favorites from the list, several of which really surprised me:

CITIZEN KANE
THE GODFATHER
PSYCHO
THE GRAPES OF WRATH
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES
DR. STRANGELOVE
AMERICAN GRAFFITI
TITANIC
SOPHIE'S CHOICE

and her three absolute favorites:

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW
TAXI DRIVER
THE SIXTH SENSE

Mom's got a dark side that I'm just now discovering.

Here are some that she couldn't make it through (so we'll try again at a later date):

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (too boring for her)
THE SEARCHERS (ditto)
NASHVILLE (too much going on to keep up with)
DO THE RIGHT THING (much too "urban" for her tastes)

And defying all expectations, she doesn't particularly like Hitchcock films (with PSYCHO being the exception) or Chaplin films (although she did sporadically laugh at THE GOLD RUSH).

We started watching these films when she was 69; she's 72 now, if that helps.

BTW, we're not that far from another AFI list. It won't be tabulated and revealed until 2017, but films released in 2006-2015 should be eligible.

Re: Stuff Your Mom Likes!

I am at my parents house right now for dinner and this thread made me go look at their movie collection. My dad owns exactly 0 movies, music or books. So everything there is my mom's and she has some weird tastes but seem to align with mine.

Blade Runner- The Final Cut BD
Twin Peaks - The Entire Mystery BD
X-Files - 9 seasons on DVD and both movies on DVD
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - all 7 seasons on DVD
Angel - All five seasons on DVD
Firefly and Serenity on BD (I love you Ma)
Lord Of The Rings
Harry Potter films
Haven
Grimm
Once Upon A Time

I need to go home right now because I think my mother might have robbed me. I haven't even gotten to the horror stuff yet.

Holy shit, my mom has Bubba Ho-Tep. I might need to borrow that one.
Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army Of Darkness
John Carpenter's The Thing
John Carpenter's The Fog
The Shining
The Exorcist
Jaws

Checking her DVR I noticed a bunch of shows about murder mysteries. I wonder if my dad needs to be worried?
