Movies that were wildy better than expectations

GOTG made me think of this.

When I heard about this movie, and even after I saw the post credits Collector scene, I thought that GOTG was not only a terrible idea for a film, but I would have put hard cash on it being MCUs first harcore flop.

Instead I saw one of the most enjoyable movies I have seen in a long time. I loved it and think it is the best of all the MCU movies.

I remember thinking similar things about Cameron's Titanic and Avatar but both were terrific films.

What are some others you have seen?

Re: Movies that were wildy better than expectations

Definitely The Matrix

I'd also add:

Inception
Batman Begins
Casino
Drive
The Lego Movie
You Don't Mess With the Zohan
Now You See Me
Avatar
Se7en
The Fugitive

I tend not to get my hopes up too much these days, so it's always nice to see something that blows me away.

The Lone Ranger
Horrible reviews but I thought it was very entertaining...

Recently, Edge of Tomorrow and Lego Movie. Guardians of the Galaxy hit right around my expectations.

Ooh, 21 Jump Street is a perfect one. Thought that was going to be an absolute turd and loved every minute of it.

Probably Fight Club. The marketing campaign for the movie made it sound like every other generic actioner before it hit theaters. Another one would be The Usual Suspects, I saw it before word had gotten out it was going to be a classic.

Initially I hated avatar. It was a movie that I grew to appreciate more and more every time I saw it. It wasn't until around my 8th or 9th viewing that I started absolutely loving it!

I'm now in the process of researching 4k 3d tv's just for Avatar! Can't wait!!!!!1

Surprisingly, Battleship. Watched it as a 99-cent rental on Vudu, expecting a huge crap-fest but it was pretty entertaining for what it was- just don't take it seriously. (And it has very little to do with the board game- the main thing is a generic alien invasion.)

Locke. I didn't think one man in a car driving could be entertaining but Tom Hardy pulled it off.

So basically, you hated Avatar when everyone loved it and now that there's some backlash you love it. Makes sense.

I honestly don't think I'd watch a film I disliked that many times. Or more than once, for that matter.

If I watched Avatar nine times, I'd probably be so batshit insane by that point that I'd start thinking it was good too.

"He loved Big Brother," and all that.

Re: Movies that were wildy better than expectations

Titanic had horrible buzz, to the point that even going into the first weekend (after many critics had seen the film) it was still expected to bomb. I realize that many here hate the movie, but it certainly proved to be 'wildly better than expectations'.

I only had a bad vibe about GOTG until I saw the teaser trailer...after that, I was looking forward to it. Although I still don't think it's nearly as good as many of you seem to believe (Best movie of the year? Guys, it's not even the best movie of the summer.).

Typical superhero movie buzz. It's the Greatest! Thing! Ever!

...until the next one comes along in a few months.

Ha, I came in here to post The Matrix, but I was beaten by the first two replies.

Oh, and The Dark Knight? Really Dr. DVD? That one had HUGE hype going into it for months.

Casino Royale. Initial reaction to Craig's casting was so negative.

A 1975 Hong Kong film that was released in the U.S. in 1979: INFRA-MAN.

Even Roger Ebert gave it a rave review.

I remember attending a Godzilla movie at Japan Society that summer and witnessing a group of fanboys entering the auditorium after coming from a screening of INFRA-MAN and telling their friends it was the best superhero movie ever. All pre-internet.

I've heard there is a slight chance that Infra-Man might get a Blu-ray release.

Re: Movies that were wildy better than expectations

I gotta go with The Matrix as well. That's the biggest one for me by far. But a few others besides:

The Sixth Sense
Super Troopers
Office Space
Rocky Balboa
Rambo
300
Oblivion
Robocop (2014)
