With how much Guardians is getting love from all over the place, I don't think the weekend drop will be the average Marvel 55-60% second weekend drop. I believe it has a good shot doing (or coming close to) $50M next weekend meaning the Turtles have to aim for $50M or higher.
AOE has made over a billion dollars worldwide. How on earth has it underperformed?

Re: Weekend Box Office 8/1-8/3: I Am Groot edition

T4 is quite a bit lower domestically than the previous films (20-30% not counting ticket inflation), so that isn't up for debate. But it doesn't matter much since foreign is more than making up for it. Similar thing happened with the 4th Pirates film.

Found this interesting - from BOM:
Guardians of the Galaxy wound up having a ton of appeal with women: exit polling indicated that the audience was 44 percent female, which is the biggest share ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie (the previous high was 40 percent for The Avengers). Meanwhile, the audience was 55 percent over the age of 25.

I did actually notice a large number of females at my showing.

Here's the comparison of Transformers movies. There's no question it has under-performed domestically compared to the previous entries in the series.

But yeah, foreign box office has exploded the last few years to really make up that difference.

TF4 is only $17M away from being the number 1 movie of the year.
(the number 1 spot being held by the criminally overrated Captain America: Winter Soldier)

Having only been in the theaters for 6 weeks it can overcome.

That being said, it is NOT always about the money a movie brings in.
Michael Bay films are more about the experience you feel when you leave teh theater.
In that aspect he always delivers!
I always leave in an excited and euphoric state after seeing a Bay film.

Thank you.

It's the Chris Pratt effect. My girlfriend made a noise to herself when he got shirtless in the prison.

But she loved the movie as a whole. She was even more enthusiastic about it than I was, and I was fucking stoked.

Paramount also gave up the Chinese rights to the film, which is also where the film has made most of its money. However, I guess the trade-off there is they were able to produce the film at a reduced cost.

Transformers: $320M domestic; $390M international
Transformers 2: $402M domestic; $434M international
Transformers 3: $353M domestic; $771M international
Transformers 4: $241M+ domestic; $764M+ international ($301M+ being in China alone)

At the rate its currently going, AOE won't cross $250M domestically. That's underperforming compared to the last three especially given ticket inflation alongside 3D and IMAX distribution.

To whom did they give up the Chinese rights? The Chinese government?

God. There are so many things wrong with this post.

So glad to see GotG do so well. I've been excited since the initial announcement. I ordered their Star Wars-esque poster for my home theater room, I'll probably see it again in theaters and it's a day 1 Blu-ray purchase for me.

Yeah, Transformers 4 underperformed domestically but performed well abroad. It was a co-production with a few chinese companies, but Paramount still received 25% of the ticket sales.

Final numbers trickling out:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-amazes-723049
UPDATED: The quirky superhero tentpole easily rockets to the top August debut of all time in North America, as well as scoring the third-best launch of the year so far; overseas, it earns $67.4 million for a global opening of $161.7 million.

Rousing the ailing summer box office to life, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy opened to a record-breaking $94.3 million in North America, the top August debut of all time and besting every other summer tentpole save for Transformers: Age of Extinction in another sizeable victory for Marvel Studios.

I'm most impressed that it managed to make nearly as much as an established brand like Captain America, which was also well reviewed and still off the heals of Avengers. Kind of crazy.

Not exactly, since there's still marketing costs to be considered and probably a few other factors.

Plus the studio only gets what, like 65% of that domestic (first weekend) and about 40% of that international take (depending on territory)?

While on the Disney tip, any chance for a quicker-than-expected disc release of this? Remember that Frozen certainly didn't waste much time.

November 27th -> Feb 25th for Frozen (digital release, DVD on March 18th) is roughly 3 months.

3 Months from now on this would be November 4th which is too early to take advantage of the holiday crush, i would say a mid-november or mid-december release, so 3.5 - 4.5 months. My money is on Black Friday for retail disc (so either November 25th or November 28th).

From Cars (2006): Related merchandise, including scale models of several of the cars, broke records for retail sales of merchandise based on a Disney·Pixar film,[2] bringing an estimated $10 billion in 5 years since the film's release.

Marvel had a merchandising revenue of about $5.6b in 2010.
