Beyond the obvious kowtowing to the China boxoffice, I'm curious to see if there's any historical logic behind how they shoehorned indistinguished mainland Chinese actress Tian Jing into this.

What type of footage would you be expecting from a King Kong movie that would make it "different" enough for you?
It's not like audiences are expecting a Terrence Malick interpretation of Kong.

I was hoping it would be more "he's a 60-foot talking ape who solves crimes in Los Angeles, with the help of Charo and her goochie-goochie squad"...

james2025a laid out his reasoning pretty well, in my opinion
What, an asian person can't just be part of the cast?

At the same time though... it is interesting. Maybe she is there to cater to the Chinese market, easy as it is to manipulate the heads of those who allow our films come in. I'm guessing that Goodman and some others to be involved w/ Monarch? If even in a hushed sense?

Maybe the studio wanted someone relatively unknown like Gareth Edwards was when he directed Godzilla. Granted, Vogt doesn't come from low budget sci-fi movie. We'll see.

I'm not sure how this King Kong is going to fight Godzilla.
Even though this looks like biggest Kong we've seen yet, Godzilla ('14) probably still outweighs him by at least 30x.

One thought is this takes place in the 70's and he's a young ape. The Godzilla he'll eventually fight is 'present day', 40 years later. He'll grow a lot bigger by then.
Or, what I'm kind of hoping for, is a smaller, intelligent, agile ape up against this lumbering, radioactive force of nature. The juxtaposition of the 2 could be cool. Something different than 2 huge monsters pushing each other into buildings over and over again.

I think he's going to be smaller than G no matter what. And that's good.
Kong doesn't need an equal size for G. He's a fucking gorilla. That's an advantage to him at his current size alone.
Legendary has said that Kong was 100 feet. That's just a number they said. Whatever his final height is... I dunno. Our US G is 355 feet. So... I'm assuming he might "grow" or whatever. 100 feet is pretty fucking small. Doesn't match up much. Granted a Muto was much smaller than G but... it's Kong... you kind of want him to be close to height next to G. I'd say a 280 foot Kong would be as small as I could see it still being ok.
Also... I don't think he's 100 feet. Maybe I'm really shitty at guessing measurements but... he looks a good amount bigger than 100 feet.
